Replacement windscreen

Featured Replies

Morning

just had a stone crack my screen on the M4, still drivable but needs replacing.

As iv just moved up north, very rural, no garage, I would like a heated screen, if it is possible to fit, instead of my current non heated screen, is this possible? ,  will the heated screen wiring loom be fitted to my car( 15 Scout) and what button could I use.

Also, would you think my insurance would be willing to let me pay the extra for a heated screen or only replace the standard one.

Have read a few threads about the lane assist recalibration, is this normally coved by insurance or do I pay for this to be done, will be calling insurance later

cheers

calibration should be covered although it's a pain if you don't have a local place that has the equipment to do it (I skipped this bit as never used it). I wouldn't have garbage Pilkington screen either only genuine.

Hoping I’ll get a genuine one as still in warranty, I’ll ask for one anyway

Warranty won’t help with replacement of a stone damaged screen. It’s an insurance job.

£50 excess with most insurers I think.

Yes,  sorry didn’t make myself clear, I meant I could hopefully get a genuine vag screen as the car in warranty and not a cheaper screen that some people say aren’t so good, definitely a insurance job

Okay, understand now. Good luck with it!

dont hope! DEMAND it! some manufactures wont cover warranty of the camera etc if the screen is not genuine, from experience dont get a pilkington fitted, just dont, any good fitter will get you genuine ( you need to ask for genuine only) and it wont cost you any extra

I must have been quite lucky with my Pilkington screen. Been fitted just over a year and no issues, heating elements and all - it works exactly as a replacement screen should.

Calibration is around £450 to do. There's not many places with the correct equipment to do the work so some places charge what they like.

I am in the process of getting new screen through autoglass- been very specific I want Skoda original glass, it is a heated screen do wanted original equipment quality.

They are ordering glass, then I have the fitting and lane camera calibration done at one of their branches.

Cheers guys

does anyone know if I can retro fit a heated screen?  as my cracked one is not heated, I realise I will need to pay extra,

will the wiring loom be in the car, anyone know?

cheers

I think the chances of getting your insurer to replace your non-heated screen with a heated one are zero. They’ll replace like for like. They won’t be interested in retrofitting anything.

The wiring isn't there, to the screen or the CANBUS, or the dash switch.

It'd be cheaper to sell the car and buy one with the heated screen.

Ok thank you Silver1011 that was the info I was after, I was willing to buy the screen myself, not expect my insurance to buy it, but now I have been told wiring isn't there, it's not going to be cost effective.

cheers

Whilst the windscreen itself is likely to be the most expensive component in a possible retro-fit, I'd imagine the wiring, coding and compatibility with the cars CANBUS will cause some significant headaches.

Then there is the new Climatronic panel...

That sounds rather expensive Auric. In addition to my standard policy £75 excess, I paid £125 for the calibration of the 1st windscreen replacement, probably only because I naively asked for a replacement  in our work car park, rather than an Autoglass centre.  A year later, I was unlucky with another small stone and needed a second replacement, where the calibration was covered by my excess and done in the nearest equipped Autoglass centre.
