Tight turns in a skoda scout and a low grumble from rear

Featured Replies

In my 2008 PD scout I notice if i take a tight turn (full lock or near full lock) I can hear a low growl from the rear of the car. I assume this is the rear diff. Is this a sign that the rear diff is failing or is it just something that skoda scouts do. This car is new to me

Thoughts and observations please

It's not normal for the scout ! It sounds more like a front CV joint, check one of your bellows hasn't split and let the grease out ! or possibly a wheel bearing. Cheers Stuart

This is not a cv joint or a wheel bearing. I only hear it on full lock or nearly full lock when turning slowly (i.e when turning around corner of house, parking car etc.

Update: I rotated the back wheels to the front and visa versa and the noise has substantially reduced. I had changed the rear diff fluid and it was old. I checked that my mechanic changed the haldex fluid and found it was new looking however I suspect that the filter was not changed. I have one on order and will change is soon. I got a flat yesterday and put on the spare wheel (16" rim) and the noise was much worse in turns when I got the tyre fixed and the 17" rim back on the noise was reduced in turns.

On the 17" rim there are four tyres of the same type and make.

Could differential wear between tyres cause such a groaning noise when turning ?

I have not changed the front diff oil. I will be changing in a week or so. I am still learning my way around this car.

Last night i changed the fluid and the filter in the Haldex. (I had paid for this work to be done about 1500miles ago). The fluid looked golden and pretty clean however some crud flakes did come out in the drain fluid. I had an hard time loosening the cover to the filter (size 24 socket required). I suspect that the filter has been in the car for all of its 119000 miles and was never changed. After changing the fluid and filter the groaning in tight turns has stopped. Good result I would say. I suspect that with the dirt in the fluid and the blocked filter there was allways pressure on the cluches in the haldex. This had the effect of locking a diff between the fron and rear axels . The job took me about 1hr and 20 mins. It would be a lot easier and quicker off a lift rather than ramps. The next time I do this job I would expect it to take 15 /20 mins.
