Automatic braking on parking sensors

Featured Replies

Got a bit close to another car parked behind mine while reversing out of a space last weekend; to my surprise, my car braked automatically to prevent a bump.  I had no idea it had this function, does anyone know any more about it like what conditions it works under and does it work for both the front and rear sensors?

It's explained in the manual (p226 of my pdf version). Essentially at low speed, forwards or backwards, it will do exactly as you saw.

How it works is explained a couple of pages earlier.

wouldn't it be a splendid idea to have some sort of operator or user manual in each car supplied:D

Don't be silly, no-one would ever read it :D

I started to read the manual, by the time I got to page 3, I was fast asleep. :sleepy:

Think this option is only if you have park assist fitted..

Don’t think it’s related to Park Assist - just to MY18 and omwards.

Mines got park assist and is a late 2017 L & K, I was parking  on a lane at a NT property we were visiting, I had to put it up on the verge and low bushes behind activated this function....it's quite severe and was really unexpected ( I'm a sod reading the manual, it's far more entertaining finding out all the nuances of a new car as you go along...kinda guy).....just like the final warning on the lane assist!!

it is in all 2018 models and is called ManoverAssist

+1.

but its not clear to me how Manoeuver Assist in MY18 models is different to the Automatic Emergency Braking in MY17 and earlier models.

from the manual, under Park Assist:-

"If the system detects a risk of collision during parking, automatic emergency braking takes place to prevent a collision.
the parking is terminated by the emergency braking
"

this would b wat @The Skud experienced in his MY17 L&K.

based on the above, does Manoeuver Assist continue to operate despite having done an emergency brake for u?

the above is different to "Automatic brake assist when speeding".

in this case, it automatically brakes, to slow u down, if u try to exceed the 7km/h during a park assist manoeuver.

all of the above is again different to "Front Assist", which will brake if a collision is imminent at speeds of more than 5 km/h.

I think what the OP is talking about is the 'rear traffic alert' function which is part of the BLIS package (uses the same radar).

This only operates if you are reversing (say from a parking space) and there is conflicting traffic or an obstacle. It works up to about 6 mph. I think it become std ,from 2017 brochure, on most models but defo on SEL and L&K.

It saved me once when I started to reverse from a parking space into a traffic flow and a car came down very quickly. The car sensed it long before I had noticed and braked pretty hard. Phew!!

My Aug MY2017 L&K has it and has activated a few times when reversing.

I don't think so, no blind-spot warning on my bog standard SE-Business and it braked sharply for a stationary car behind me.

Skoda have a bewildering number of "assist" features published on their website over the years. None of them do quite what is claimed on production cars. They seem to be randomly featured on certain trim levels, options etc and sometimes removed or altered. There is a great inconsistency in their choice of names with the same feature being called something else a few months later. Vw and other group members choose different names to add to the confusion.

There is often reference to rear radar, side radar etc. I question are there a

any such things fitted in reality, just ultrasonic sensors front, side and rear and a reversing camera, which are not all fitted to all trims.

I welcome to be corrected if someone can show me physical evidence of these rear or side  radars.

Well I guess a whole raft of EU Declarations of Conformity from the different component suppliers could be part of a scam.

And the public declaration that they are fitted to Skoda vehicles could be part of the same scam.

No-one would ever find out about that would they??

Honestly I think you are stuck in a conspiracy theory

So you can tell me where the rear and side radars are fitted?

The ‘rear and side radars’ are fitted behind the rear bumper, and is used for Blind Spot Monitoring. The Manouver Assist uses the parking sensors, and this system is on MY18 and onward cars.

they are not fantasy mythical things.

as @GaSelle pointed out, they are located inside the rear bumper.

this image is from the workshop manual.

specifically components labelled #7 and #9.

He won't believe you 'cos that is just a page from a manual. :D:D:D:D

Hmmm... Now who do we know who is brave enough to rip a bumper off to see what's behind it?

@xman might b willing to volunteer :)

just like how the apostles did not believe Jesus had risen from the dead until they touched/saw the holes in his hands!!!

he shall not believe until he sees for himself........hehehehe

Ok, lame jokes :dull: and religious zealots aside :shake:, I simply set a question/challenge and yes its been answered properly by JR RS. So rear side radars are real, no rear centre unit in all likelihood, and used for blind spot and lane assistance.

I have read (skoda site iirc) parking assist, manoeuvre assist, and low speed crash avoidance (front/rear) rely, at low speed, on the ultrasonic sensors rather than the radar units, which are probably not fitted on cars without blind spot detection.

On a more serious note, I think you are right @xman in that at least some of the assist systems are driven by the sensors. For example I have the side sensors and I'm told they will detect cars approaching from the side if I am reversing out of a car-park space. Never had them trigger (yet) as I tend not to park nose-in. But I also have the blind spot / rear-end radar system so don't know if that is also involved in some way. I agree it is unlikely the radar units are included in cars without blind spot monitoring, otherwise I'm guessing it could be enabled through vcds.

Front radar (in the grille) is included on all Superbs, and is used for Front Assist  (the ‘front braking thing’). Can also be used for ACC (optional).

Side sensors (two front, two rear) are used for Park Assist.

Front and rear sensors (optional) are used for Optical Parking System and Manouver Assist.

Front camera (in the windscreen - optional) is used for Smart Light Assist, High Beam Assist, Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Rear radars (optional) are used for Blind Spot Monitoring.

Are we good and clear now? :)

And I've read the front mounted camera comes in 2 forms, depending on level of functionality (TSR and traffic assist require the better unit)

It maybe that the non ACC models have a more basic front radar unit too.

A lot of these features are set to become standard on all cars in 3 or 4 years, under latest EU proposals.
