Oil change with oil pump experiences

Featured Replies

Hello,

do you have any exerience about the oil change at home with a manual or electric oil pump? Any good or bad experiences? Any best practices?

thanks in advance

I've always just taken out the sump plug myself. Any reason in particular you're looking at pumping it out?

Hi cheaster

My car goes into the garage every 10k miles for a service, where they change the oil via the sump plug. Being super fussy, I also change the oil and filter in between the garage services, so the oil and filter really get changed every 5k miles. I use a pump system, where you warm up the oil first and then stick a small hose down the dipstick hole. 30mins later, job done. In the old days I did used to get under the car and drain via sump plug, but this system is so much easier.  The pump I use is the Pela 6000, a very easy piece of kit to use. Just make sure you drive the car a couple of local miles first, to get the oil fairly hot. Otherwise, you will be pumping for a very long time trying to get cold thick oil out.

Pumping / sucking out dead simple and no reason not too, the  change the sump plug still if you want to.

As professionals do that do many many oil changes in a day.

At operating temperature oil changes done safely.

Another vote for pela oil extractors handy things to have and use.

hello and thanks for the information.

chrisund123 i have to do it because the sump plug is glued due to scree thread id broken. Should I consider the change the sump?

Don't forget if you only drain via the sump plug you leave about half a litre in the oil cooler below the filter.

Oh, I guess it is the most important part because it contains all the dirt. Guys how do you solve it?

I use a sealey manual oil extractor,  I suck the sump out of the dipstick tube, then the cooler once the oil filter is removed,

In the past I have removed the sump plug afterwards to see how much oil left in the sump but only a dribble came out.
