air con query

Featured Replies

Hi

Ive noticed that when i switch my air con is swtiched off i still get the temperature come through the vents ie when on hot and i switch off hot air continues to come out same if had cold. Didnt do this with previous cars.

Any ideas or am i being technically thick lol

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you mean that after you switch the AC button off you still get a bit of ice cold air? then this is probably due to the residual refrigerant pressure still acting on the system, similar to the way it would if your car switched itself off at traffic lights?

I too am a bit confused by your original question,

but I thought they are 2 different systems ?

so if the AC is "on", it refrigerates and dries the air.

The heating system, based on the temperature you have set and the power level chosen, determines whether that cold, dry air then needs to be heated any further to give you the temperature of air you will need ?

if the system is on, and you have asked for a certain temperature (ie 22º) then whether or not the AC function is also on should have no effect on the temperature of the air coming out the vents. It'll just be drier air

i have my AC on all the time, even when needing warmer air in the winter. It helps clear the windscreen quicker with the drier air

What i mean is that when i switch the air con off and fan the temperature that comes through the vents is still the same as what it was when the fans were on. I dont understand when its the right temperature within the car when i switch off the air control/temperature i still get the temperature i had set via air con when the sytem is switched off and no fans on.

Maybe im not explaining it well.

Do you press the switch to the left of the large round knob in the centre of the climate control panel - the one marked OFF, or some other switch?

Remember that when you are driving along even with the fan off the air will be pushed through the vents by the motion of the car.

The switch that says OFF and i know air is pushed through the vents by the motion

Hi Chrisski

i get what your saying, i have the same, i've had air con on for a while now but the other day i turned it off at the off button as it was not needed, i expected the motion of the car would push through cool air from outside but instead the car started to get hot, i felt the vents and hot air was coming through slowly like from over the engine and warming the car up so i had to either put the air con back on or open the window, turning the temp down even though it was off didn't help. i just wanted fresh air from out side.

Not surprising when you consider where the heater air intake is - it's not getting cold air from the front of the car but hot air from the area between the bonnet and the windscreen...

Which is where most cars now have their heater air intake to reduce the CdA figure. Once again "eco design" causes real world problems :wall:

You could boost the airflow with the  blower on and the aircon off. so that the air would not be coming in slowly. The faster moving air would not be so warm as any heat soak would be diluted . But leaving the climate control, if you have it, in auto is the best option.

Most cars have minimum, if any, air flow without the blower being on -in my experience.B) Only cars of the 1960s that had long flexible pipes up to behind the radiator grill.

I have the same "issue" with my polo, even if AirCon, Fans are switched off I get the temperature come through the vents.

That underbonnet area is heated by the engine. A large percentage of the engine power is converted to waste heat, some of which migrates into the cars interior.

I can confirm that if my climate control and the blower are switched off, then hot air trickles into the car via the vents.

That's what climate control is for, to heat or cool the air as required.

Enough already.
