Vrs Clutch Slip. - INFO.

Featured Replies

Just a quick post of some info that some of you owners may be interested in.

I have just had my 40K service, and a month before this, I noticed I was getting clutch slip, ONLY in 5th or 6th gear @ between 2k-2.7k rpm, on the motorway when overtaking.( no other time )

The car is a 53 plate registered Jan 04.

Here is the interesting info - my local dealer contacted Skoda technical, who put them onto a tech note issued, describing the exact same problems I described.

CAUSE:- There was a supplier of the clutch plates changed sometime during the build weeks of my car, it appears that there is problem with these.

However the dealer will have to dismantle my clutch to check if they are the "iffy" plates, if so they will be replaced under warranty.

However given it is just over 2 yrs old, 40k miles virtually all motorway, if i should argue the warranty point, regardless whether it is the "iffy" plates.

SO if you have a Furby vRS registered on a 53 plate, there appears to be a possibility that you MAY develop the same fault.

P.S - Dont ask about remap ( dont want to invalidate warranty), I do have the Cupra intake & Green panel filter. ( soot output 100% reduced with these).

I recently had Both my clutch and flywheel changed under warranty on my standard ;) 53 plate, Dealer was very helpful and at least i can just change the clutch plate now as I have a good flywheel :D

what happens if your car has not got the "iffy" plates? Will the dealer then charge you for the work carried out?

So you know which build weeks are in question?

at 40k of of motorway driving, I'd request a replacement under warrenty anyway, mines a learner car and done neary 30k, and the clutch feels "as new" its an 05 though, 10 months old. my friend has a merc a-class that he teaches in, just comming to the end of its warrenty, and done 85k, he managed to get a new clutch from the dealer under warrenty in that.........

I think it really comes down to dealer discression and an inspection of the plate, My dealer told me that they would have to take the plates out and inspect them for any manufacturing defects or in my case if the flywheel had caused the slipping of the clutch, If there was no evidence that the clutch was caused to slip by some sort of defect then it can be knocked back as a warranty claim as it can be simply poor driving technique that causes it.

Interesting point.

I can't remember what the OEM cost of clutch is, but I do know that a performance clutch (may cost more or less!) costs less than the labour charge to get to the clutch - whether you change it or not.

Put another way, if the dealer looks at it, then decides the plates are not the iffy ones and so doesn't require a new clutch, who's gonna pay the bill for the labour? I wouldn't want to pay for it if it were my car.

If Skoda have such bad configuration control on the production line that they cant tell from exactly which VIN/Engine number onwards the newer clutch plates are fitted, then that is their problem!

i.e. If they need to do a visual inspection to see due to a bad product control on the line then its their own fault!

I am surprised they admitted this to the public without thinking of the cost of potentially having to do visual inspections on all cars in a given batch/build week.

But they have.

Edit isnt working...

The cost of all this will probably ultimately be borne by the Skoda's clutch plate supplier (I doubt they make the plates in-house).

Skoda/VAG would have defined a specification for this part, the supplier product delivered to Skoda is not up to specification, thus supplier in breach of contract and liable for costs arising from mistake.

Skoda/VAG might have got the spec wrong, in which case their liability not the suppliers. But, havent they been making these PD130 motors long before the vRS? Do SEATS or VW/Audi with the PD130 also have the clutch slip issue?

Forget all of this in the case of owner abuse or modded cars though, they'll do what they can to throw it back at you...

Haven't inspected the old clutch yet, still got it though as I requested it back (it's only a small part really, and it was on the car for about 33k when totally standard power output). Will have a look :D

My Clutch was slipping at around 32k miles (im on about 36k now)

I didn't get anything done to it just carried on driving and it fixed itself

it got worse and then after a while it just dissapeared after a few long drives

so may have been oil on the clutch and it burnt off (possible as I thought the overfilled it at the service I had)

or I hear it can come about from hard fast driving where it can coat the Clutch with a funny film

so both can get burnt off in about 500 miles i'd guess

saved me all the hassle of getting the clutch changed

mine was also slipping in 5th 6th at around 2k - 3k revs to start got as worse as 4th and 3rd and then suddenly got loads better

If you need an excuse for a long drive pop along to Weston on the 25th for our lovely mini meet in the South West :D

(hehehe ikle bit of advertising)

this has been posted by other vRS owners, if it slips, apparently you need to give it a bit of hammer to take the glaze of the surface, then its ok... mine gets hammered all the time, so hopefully I wont come accross it! as tigger says, give it a bit of time and it may go away, but if you can get a free new clutch, then hey, what the hell! :)

but the initial glaze can get put there by hammering it

It may have been one of the reasons to change the 6th gear ratio, reducing the stress on the clutch when it hits full boost at around NSL?

IIRC, VW and seat changed the spec of the clutch for the 150 (same plate as 130 i think) because of slippage when standard..

Personally i think its unfair to get a warranty job for the clutch on a car thats been chipped...

my cars done 62k now.. most of it remapped.. still get occasional clutch slip but its still going strong..

Did you also like Hitlers social services policy in 1939??:P

If your dealer offered you a clutch under warranty would you say "Oh no i couldnt possibly, here take a weeks wages instead?"

If you can get it then take advantage of it I say, I was just fortunate i hadnt chipped my car when i had my clutch changed under warranty.;)
