FL Drivers seat belt pre-tensioner

Featured Replies

Hi,

Today I noticed at breaking that my drivers side pre-tensioner didnt pull me into seat while my gf on passanger side did. I tried 2x later to see if it works but nothing pulled me. I felt it once before but it doesnt seem to work. I tried test via OBD but I have no login code. Any ideas?

Anyone else has same/similar issue?

I thought pre-tensioners were explosive and a one time deal?

Um no idea, Superb has electric one that pulls the whole seat belt back into the "hole". Its not one time thing because I have had to brake very fast 3-4x in last 9 months and each time passenger side pulled it back. My side only twice. After second time never again. And when u stop the car u hear the electric motor when it "releases" the tension. I'm worried because if its broken it should show some sort of warning light or something right?

It would be weird if that system would work just once though, u may have to brake fast more than once in car's life time ^^. Could be different systems though...
On Superb it works like this (found video of Toyota, but same thing):

Looks like they went electric when I wasn't looking.  They used to use a charge and needed replacing after use.

Is it possible that the driver and passenger have different parameters that take into account the fact that you have the steering wheel to hold onto to brace?

Obviously it's something to ask a dealer about.  Unfortunately, I've never come across a dealer employee of any brand who would be able to answer.  So it will be passed back to Czechoslovakia or Germany and be returned in the form of a translation so poor it becomes a form of poetry.

Here's my stab at it (I've gone for a simple Haiku)

On brakes you apply
Electricity applied
Embraced firmly you

My recollection is the same, pretensioners are explosive and one use only, like airbags.  You don't really want to be in the seat when they do go off - they leave considerable bruising /friction burns.

From the online manual http://ws.skoda-auto.com/OwnersManualService/Data/en/Superb_3V/03-2015/Manual/Superb/B8_Superb_OwnersManual.pdf

"Belt tensioners The safety for the driver, front passenger and passengers on the outer rear seats who are wearing their seat belts, is enhanced by the belt tensioners fitted to the inertia reels on the front and rear external seat belts. If there is a collision with a certain severity the seat belts are tightened by the belt tensioner so that unwanted body motion is prevented. Belt tensioners are not activated in the event of minor collisions, in the case of a roll-over and also not in accidents in which no major forces are produced. WARNING ■ Any work on the belt tensioner system including removal and installation of system components because of other repair work, must only be carried out by a specialist garage. ■ The protective function of the system is only adequate for a single accident. If the belt tensioners have been deployed, it is then necessary to replace the entire system. Note ■ The belt tensioners can also be deployed if the seat belts are not fastened. ■ Smoke is generated when the belt tensioners are deployed. This is not an indication of a fire in the vehicle. ■ When disposing of the vehicle or parts of the belt tensioner system, comply with national legal requirements."

Note underlined section.

One inertial reel seat belt probably locked but the other didn't.

That's very interesting, but I don't think we're talking about the same thing though. I know this pre-tensioning fired more then twice on me and on passenger side it ALWAYS fires. Even now. But its not like "airbag" thing but simple electronic pre-tensioning. When car is stopped it disengages and u hear electric sound nose for 3-4 seconds. I will ask dealer because when this did work it made me sit really firm while braking, so even braking part was safer (if I'd had to maneuver in danger) not to mention in case of rollover it would probably save my neck.

I would hear pretensioner fire cause I already had accident with Octavia where that happened about 4 years ago. My chest hurt few minutes after accident but then it was fine.

This what I was talking about (from manual) - I'm guessing that's not the same system:
Safety for the driver and front passenger wearing their seat belts is enhanced by reversible seat belts. Reversible seat belts are automatically tensioned in critical driving situations tightly over the body and then released again. Further information » page 165, Proactive passenger protection.

Update:
In manual I found paragraph that says that this system is disabled in "Sport" mode. I disabled drive mode "SPORT" and the pre-tensioner works just fine now. Very strange why this would be disabled in sport mode however...
Anyway if anyone gets login codes I would be happy to have them either way! :D

But system works, 100% times. Tested 3 times today. Drove 60km/h hit brakes like something would be on road and voila, belts got tighten. Once car was stopped or brake was released, the pressure was released as well. Cool system!
It also puts up windows and so on =)

@JackySi

The system you describe is known as 'Crew Protect Assist' in the UK. Outlined at page 242 in the MY17 owners manual.

It should work just as you describe including window closing etc and is NOT part of a one off application system with explosive components.

That's interesting. We specced Crew Protect Assist, but have never experienced it activating. Interesting to know it's disabled in Sport mode though! Odd.
