BLT EGR delete via software with ASV retained

Featured Replies

As per the title, I want to map out the EGR on my 56 BLT engine, via software, but retain the anti shudder valve? Is this possible?

If not, then I'm thinking use the smaller holed EGR gasket and map out the associated EML instead. I'd prefer the above option though, no spanners required.

Worth a read, but be aware of implications if you get it wrong, and there does not appear to be any clarification over the anti-shudder operation:-

I have had exactly what you want done. I have a BLT engine i kept the ASV and when it was remapped the EGR was modified and cooler removed and the remap applied. Car has been perfect with no side affects so far.

Will it be ok to keep the cooler?

Well I guess if your removing the egr you don't need the cooler anymore. You can get a coolant bypass pipe, mine was from darkside. I guess it would be the pipe used by the earlier engine without the cooler. You may be able to keep the cooler and loop the system I am not sure.

How was the EGR modified? If I blank off the EGR, does that render the ASV redundant, gases can no longer flow through the EGR to it?

You've not totally understood the airflow path into your engine.

From intercooler, through Antishudder valve then through EGR into inlet manifold/engine.  Blocking the exhaust gas input into the EGR (dotted line) has no impact on the ASV.

Careful with removing bits of the emissions system though, from 20th of last month  it's a major MOT fail if spotted visually.

Some people blank both ends, should be enough to do just one.

But if you're getting it mapped out, there's no need to do anything physically?

That's the advice of Shark HQ, to keep the ASV without losing the physical EGR but disabling and mapping it out.

With the new MOT regs, I think tuners can no longer legally offer EGR delete software.

Mine was modified by Unit18 and i did ask for information on what they did exactly. I was told that the cooler was removed (as requested) and the coolant bypass pipe was fitted, then the egr part that goes to the turbo was blanked then the other part was cut and welded. Not sure if they have done anything internally as i haven't looked myself.

They probably never really could, it's just not an area that's enforced at the moment (other than now, in theory, by the new MOT).

Construction and Use regulations which is the legal framework, has for a long time forbidden any changes which 'worsen emissions' or some wording to that effect. Virtually anything any tuner does, let alone disabling EGRs, is going to worsen emissions in some way.  Proving it would be expensive though.
