Fabia not starting after crash,Airbags deployed

Featured Replies

Hi all.Last week I crashed my 2001 fabia. It was a hit to the front end when I came off a country lane (went too fast and understeered into a post.Don't worry,I know I am a massive idiot.) I was the only one involved and came out of it fine.but, the airbags have gone off.I couldn't for the life of me get it to start so I had to get someone to tow it home.As it sits now it still won't start. I know that the airbags and their sensors need replacing but I don't know if there is an imobiliser of sorts that just shuts off fuel in an accident.I have found these forums to be very helpful in the past so I figure someone should be able to shed some light on the situation.I am also curious as to whether or not I could get a parts car to replace 90 percent of the bits.i.e if I got the airbags and airbag computer from a parts car thats airbags haven't gone off and just plug them in.I want to keep the car on the road as it has been a good cheap runabout and still seems fine underneath.I have got plenty of time to do repairs if that is what it takes so that isn't really an issue. It is just a matter of getting it to start to see if the gearbox or anything else got destroyed.

To clarify,I say the car wont start as when I turn the key it does nothing,no starter noise just nothing. It could be something as simple as a loose connector but that is why I am asking,I don't know what could be wrong.

There is indeed a shutoff flag permanently set in the ECU, you cannot reset it, only a VAG garage can do it.

Confirming you are a massive idiot, you won't be so lucky next time...

Damn.

Is it possible to get a "clean" one from a parts car and plug it in with new airbags and just run with that?

No, because they're all coded together, the airbag ECU is goosed now anyway, you cannot reset the flag in that.

Your car may be beyond economical repair, it doesn't make sense to buy another car for parts when you can just buy another one and use this one for parts.

Sad thing is,you're probably right about that,I said that because I was finding plenty of cheap 1.4 mpi fabias with duffed headgaskets and such.

The odd one comes up now and again for about 150,I even saw one at 90 euro the other day.It just sort of clicked that I might have been able to repair it that way.It sucks hard that my plans for it are in jeopardy but in the end I can always get another one and go again.

Check that the starter solenoid connection hasn't taken the opportunity to snap off just next to the connector.
