engine still running when stationary

Featured Replies

I have a edition 2ltr dsg 4x4  and when I stop at lights or in traffic queues etc instead of the engine stopping while stationary it keeps on ticking over.Has anyone else had this happen with the stop/start system ?

?

Has it ever worked,

like when the battery has enough charge, the demand from the electrics are not too high, the A/C is not on and the stop / start can function as long as 'Stop / Start off has not been selected?

Have had the car two months now and yesterday was the first time this has ever happened.

Not enough charge in the battery do you get a sign with an A in a circle with a line through it

I had got the auto stop sign showing off. So if it is a battery problem is this a basic design problem with the car or a fault with my car which has only got 900 miles on the clock?

Its not a design problem, it's designed to work like that. The car will only stop the engine when there is enough power in the battery to sustain the electrics that are running. When the battery power drops below a certain voltage the engine will restart.

If you select the vehicle option in the Columbus system and then the start/stop icon it will tell you why the stop/start didn't kick in. Mine usually says its because of the passenger compartment temperature and needs to keep the air con running.

There are lots of factors engine temp if a manual is it in gear what exsesaries are turned on battery charge fuel in tank

remember the battery monitor only maintains the battery at 80% so it has reserve capacity for the regenerative braking so it doesn’t take much to drain the battery

Thanks for the explanation gents.

I much appreciate your information.

Thanks.

It will also stay in if it is is going through a DPF regen cycle so it may well be that too

In the hot weather, air con on etc and with the same engine as you going through a regen every few hundred miles, the stop start system does not kick in on about 10-20% of occasions for me (journey dependent) at the moment

I am glad to know it's not something personal from skoda to me. THX

I remember when this first happened in my Golf and it's very baffling. Turned out to be DPF regeneration but the messaging isn't very clear on the Golf.

When this is your first experience of this it is a bit puzzling. So thanks to all the helpful advice everyone has given me. Cheers from Keith

You can bring up the start-stop status screen by going to the car menu, then the "vehicle status" page then pressing on the a-info on the left as per this picture (ignore the warning, got a puncture today!).

This screen will tell you why start-stop hasn't activated. Occasionally I get a "engine must be running" message which is weird though!

Thanks for that. THX

Does it come up with the crossed out symbol (top right of the Maxidot) ?

My octy used to do this with the DPF regen cycle, Karoq has done it when it says the engine needs to be running to maintain cabin temperature (air con)

Hi Panther,

I have been told if your battery is not fully charged it will not allow the system to switch off the engine when queuing, and as the car had been unused for a week it would not be charged up sufficiently  for stop/start system to work . Because the Koraq could be unused for possibly 2 weeks at a time I hope it does not cause any problems with other operations which require a 100% charge.

Thanks for your input.

Regards Keith

The stop / start system is quite a complicated process with a varying number of influences...

Conditions for the automatic engine shut down (stop phase):

  • The gearshift lever is in Neutral.
  • The clutch pedal is not depressed.
  • The driver has fastened the seat belt.
  • The driver's door is closed.
  • The bonnet is closed.
  • The vehicle is at a standstill.
  • The engine is at operating temperature.
  • The charge state of the vehicle battery is sufficient.
  • The stationary vehicle is not on a steep slope or a steep downhill section.
  • The engine speed is less than 1200 1/min.
  • The temperature of the vehicle battery is not too low or too high.
  • There is sufficient pressure in the braking system.
  • The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is not too great.
  • The vehicle speed since the last time the engine was switched off was greater than 3 km/h.
  • The front wheels are not turned excessively (the steering angle is less than 3/4 of a steering wheel revolution).

Conditions for an automatic restart (start phase):

  • The clutch is depressed.
  • The max./min. temperature is set.
  • The Defrost function for the windshield is switched on.
  • A high blower stage has been selected.
  • The START STOP button is pressed.

Conditions for an automatic restart without driver intervention:

  • The vehicle moves at a speed of more than 3 km/h.
  • The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is too great.
  • The charge state of the vehicle battery is not sufficient.
  • There is insufficient pressure in the braking system.

It's all in the owners manual ;)

Or it does't stop when the humidity is too high in the cabine.

I've noticed that mine will restart when the car in front pulls away.
