Bottom Front Lights question

Featured Replies

I’ve just noticed this morning that when I reversed my Karoq Edition into the garage and put the gear lever into Park, I left the engine running to get out to take a look at the front daytime running lights as I hadn't looked at them in detail yet. I noticed that the lower front light on the driver’s side was lit up but the one on the passenger side was not (the wheels were straight and not turned, and my car's light switch is set to Auto). I then drove out of the garage a bit and back in again and my wife said that now both of the lower front lights were on, not just the one. Is there an intermittent fault here or was everything working the way it should? And what exactly are those two front bottom lights for?

The lower lights have two functions, they are static cornering lights, but double up as front fog lights. It could be that although the wheels appeared straight ahead they were marginally off-centre, hence bringing one of the cornering lights on. The fog lights operate by two pulls of the main light switch, first position for front fogs, second position for rear fogs. There should be two corresponding lights which come on within the instrument cluster.

In addition to turning the steering wheel (or indicating) at speeds below 30mph, putting the car in reverse also activates the front cornering foglights.

The difference is that when in reverse, both front foglights light up together, the idea being it helps to illuminate low walls, bollards etc. for when the front end swings wide whilst reversing.

Dipped headlights need to be on (either manually or via Auto) for them to work, i.e. when you're in the darkened garage with the headlight switch set to Auto.

From left to right (on vehicles fitted with full LED headlights)...

1. Daytime running lights

2. Parking light / side light

3. Dipped beam

4. High beam

5. Fog / cornering light

If in doubt, there's always the owners manual, page 72...
