External front and rear light fault

Featured Replies

Interesting problem on my Octavia S Combi 1.6 TDI CR 2012. Whilst driving home from Stansted in the early ours i noticed the maxi dot bulb failure light come on.  I thought this is not good at 3.15 in the morning.   So I pulled into a lay-by and indicated and got that noise of the relay clicking faster than usual.  So I though it must be a indicator bulb.  However, I’m really puzzled.

The OSF side light was out, the NSF headlamp was out, the OSR W3W bulbs were all out, the number plate lights were out and OSF indicator was not working, along with NSR indicator.  Oh and the rear fog lamp was not working either.  Multiple bulb failure seems unlikely. Main beam only works on the NS too. Reversing light good.

Anyone experienced such a phenomena?  I would really appreciate any guidance to see if this a fault i can rectify myself, before visiting my local main dealer.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Sounds like it could be a problem with the BCM. Have you fitted an aftermarket HID kit to your headlights?

I'd be checking the fuses, not sure which numbers are related to lighting but there are probably a couple.

Hi there, many thanks for the suggestion  I shall have a look and see what I find, I’m guessing if its not the fuses it could the control modules.  Cheers

Checked all the bulbs, they’re all pretty bog standard osram bulbs and ring bulbs.  So nothing special fitted, all look ok, no blackened glass or corrosion around terminal pins.

Checked the main fuse box next to the battery and pulled out fuse F16.  One of the pins was black, and the fuse box body had melted slightly in the area of the black pin.  High resistance connection was the culprit.  As the plastic by the pin had melted away, it was easy to get access to the contacts to clean them and carefully adjust their position.  New fuse fitted and all the lights are working.  Thanks for the replies guys.  Cheers.

That would do it ;-)

Just thought I'd like to thank you for adding the fault to this issue as it just happened to my 08 Octavia . It had me bamboozled till I did some digging on here . Nearly the same issues with the lights except the front near side were all working.  So I pulled out fuse F16 which is a 30 amp . In the box in the engine bay and bingo burnt blade but the fuse it self was in tack and had power at both sides .  But in the process of hunting for the fault I disconnected the battery and now have the amber air bag light illuminated . .

Apologies for the late reply,  just getting over a bad dose of Ryanair travel fiascos.  Glad the post was of some help, its always worth taking a look a fuses periodically, particularly the contact blades and cleaning them both sides with a fine grade of wet and dry. The fuse element and contact blades are pressed aluminium.  Natural aluminium readily oxides and the oxide is of high resistance and invisible.  Last thing you want is a high resistance connection, as this readily heats up.  As the fuse heats up its ability to carry current reduces, of which compounds matters further by getting even hotter.

I was lucky with my airbag light it illuminated initially after battery reconnection and then went out after 30 seconds.  Maybe one of those ODB code readers devices might do the trick to identify and reset the code/light.  I bought a low cost one on eBay for my sons 2000 golf 1.4 , it cost a tenner and reset a multitude of fault codes after an engine change.

Recently had indicator rear ns at fault.  Buldb ok. However hazards worked.  No fuses burnt out.

Cause the common earth to the rear light cluster serving 4 bulbs had burnt its connection causing the fault. It was overloaded.

Remedy an independent auto electrican fitted a new heavier common earth.

CatsAvoidOaks, your suggestion on changing the F16 fuse solved the problem. Thank you very much for sharing!
