Help, Fuel pump issue

Featured Replies

Gang, I replaced the fuel filter a couple of weeks ago but then drove the car showing 0 miles for about 10 miles. Yesterday (29degrees) I started the car and it wasn't happy - it sort of kangeroo'd then settled down then a few miles up the road did a similar thing and I lost power, then sorted itself out again.

Stopped to do a chore, started ok but on the way home it lost power to such an extent I pulled over turned it off, then restarted and got home no problem. Scanned the car and it only shows up 18010/P1602 voltage too low ( i changed the clutch a few weeks back so battery was off) and a couple of air con flap codes I 've had for years. It didn't want to start a couple of times then started normally.

I've just ordered a new Temp Sender from the stealers as I read that they can cause issues and I'm pretty sure it's an aftermarket special on it at the mo.

When I went back out to it a few hours it turned over but isn't firing! Any thoughts? I'm thinking fuel or crankshaft sender now!
Further update; changed the crankshaft sensor no change but, unless anyone tells me any different, can't hear the fuel pump prime when I open the door. Guess it's fuel related then- what should I look at 1st?

Further update, replaced the fuel filter fuel was clean coming out of both ends, checked the fuses and all seem to be ok.

Am I right in thinking the only things left are relay and the fuel pump?

How do I test either?

Cheers Munster

PS How do I get to the relay do I have to take the world apart or is there a simple way, Haynes says take the world apart IIRC

The fuel pump should prime when you open the driver's door. I think the fuel pump relay is the 409 relay, as I've just removed mine to send up to another member for testing. It's not too bad to get to. Need to remove the panel that contains the OBDII port under the steering wheel and you'll be able to see all the relays.

Looks like this mate  image.thumb.png.8cba2cda9c54512a6491f51e8ce40d1d.png  & is located as Mankee says here image.png.1c9a67c7ddfa99f662be9cf106bb9eb4.png & if I remember correctly is position 4.

There is also a relay behind the battery to trigger the ECU but to be honest it sounds like your pump is on the way out or the sender unit on the top as the Kangaroo effect is generally when the pump is eith not pump as it's failing or the 3gauge sender is telling you you have fuel but in fact thetank is empty or close too it.

Oh you can buy the pump & sender seperately & don't buy secand hand one I did that then spent weeks testing ECU Relays wiring only to discover the 2nd hand pump was faulty

Cheers Alex, I shall try the relay and if that don't fix it I'll look at the pump!

Well nothing after the relay so I took the plunge and bought a pump brand new from GSF with 60% off today (WED60 if anyone is interested). So got it for £54 all in.

I'll let you know how it goes!
