Clanky DSG on 4x4

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have the 2013 model year 4x4 estate with the DSG gear box.
I have noticed that at low speeds when the pressure is re-applied to the gas, there is a bit of a clank as the DSG re-engages.

It is not really clear where the noise comes from. Perhaps the front CV joints. It doesnt really feel like a mount issue as you can normally "feel" that a bit more.
Then again, it could just be the crap design of this DSG gear box.
Has anyone else experienced low speed DSG noise?

Hi, I have a 2011 twindoor 4X4 and love the DSG gearbox. Not to say that it doesn't have its awkward moments but usually it is smooth and quiet. Where it does fall down can be at low speeds but invariably it is me that causes any problems with how I apply gas at that speed and maybe change my mind and the box gets confused with what next gear is applicable.

If I accelerate smoothly then the box is fine, if however I stab the gas and and then come off it can be jerky, however it drives the car better than me with previous manuals. Never hear noise from the gearbox though.

I have the same - but I think it's normal - DSG dis(re)engages with low speeds - it's easy to replicate if on low speeds you play with acceleration.

The same can be replicated on manual - if you play with acceleration as well.

So probably just CV joints "clicking".

DSG is great, by the way ;)

non 4x4 DSG but smooth unless operator influenced think about it, the box is an auto clutch manual if you do the same with a manual car what happens?, if the box could talk it would probably ask you to make your ***** mind up :)

Best find out the cause of the clunk while just annoying and a cause for concern and maybe a cheap fix required, leaving it can become an expensive error.

DSG Servicing, Haldex Servicing carried out as should be, then have a mechanic or technician use their trained and and experienced ears.

& 'they do not all do that', and it is not a characteristic if it never did it when new, if is it is a characteristic of a VW Group fundamental design, manufacturing or component / material failing.

I guess it's better than sitting in stop and go with the manual box.

My guess is the cv joints as well. The box seems to pull normally. Well...other than low speed reversing up a hill which can pop out of gear from time to time.

In my 3 yrs with the DSG its never popped out of gear.:o

Could be the DMF as well. They last better in the DSG than they do in the manual but they can still fail.

If you have VCDS, this procedure is worth following to reset the controller: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/6-Speed_Direct_Shift_Gearbox_(DSG/02E)

It makes the controller re-learn where the engagement points for the different actuators are (these things change over time as parts wear) and could help with rough gear shifting.

I do have it. I will have a look. Thanks for the tip.
