Featured Replies

Hi,  20011 octavia estate diesel vrs 170. my clutch pedal is on the floor, it has gone into the garage and the mechanic has said the clutch slave cylinder needs replaceing and he needs to remove the gearbox !!!! i sm sure i had this replaced last year and it didnt have the gear box taken out. please help as i have to get this sorted.

I had same problem last month, you don't need remove the gearbox to change the clutch slave cylinder.

I had it done at Lion Garage, Leicester it was about £170 for the labour and parts.

The clutch slave cylinder had done about 352000 miles when it gave up.

Kinda makes you stop to think, the above post implies no gearbox removal to replace the cylinder what failed at 350k + yet you think yours was done last year?

ME

I 'd be checking what actually was done last year, I'd take the car back where that work was ( allegedly ) done asking questions

I certainly wouldn't be going back to the mechanic your questioning ( sure indication you have doubts there anyway )

Actually on the CR 170 the gearbox has to come out to change the slave cylinder, as it's the slave cylinder and clutch release bearing built into one unit, all six speed manual model octavia's have this; only the 5 speed has an external slave cylinder.

I know it may be a long shot, but if you had the invoice for the work carried out last year and are using the same garage, then they should of at least give you a 12,000 mile or 12 month warranty, and if it's still in the warranty/milage (which ever occurs first) then they should repair it under that. Don't let them fob you off

Clutch pedal dropped to the floor on my 2010 VRS CR and it turned out to be the bearing on the slave cylinder. Main cost was 5 hours labour removing and replacing the gearbox. While it was out they gave me the option of replacing the DMF which was showing signs of wear as that also needed the gearbox out.

another great example of where "Tech'" is taking us,    20 years ago a Vauxhall Astra complete clutch could be changed in 1/2 hour by a skilled mechanic

Sure, but the "cassette clutch" is an exception. Most vehicles require the gearbox removing to change the clutch.

It's concerning when you wonder if your being given the right info by a repairer, but this thread does seem to indicate it's a box out job.  As the others say, check what was done last time and take it from there.

Also do a web search on your chosen garage ..... something I wish I had done when I bought a car a few year ago
