Featured Replies

Hi, I have a mk2 Fabia and I notice that my lights on buzzer is no longer working?

Is there a fuse for this? or something common that usuallty cases this to stop working?

Cheers,

Matty

Also I cannot find a door switch, the courtesy light is not working either so this points to this for me.

Where would the door switch be located?

Cheers.

It's part of the door lock mechanism. Can replace just the microswitch (and wires from it to PCB) , but simpler to change the whole lock module.

Always worth a look for busted wires in the door bellows before anything else though.

OK cheers.

Im more likely to go the microswitch replacement route (coz thats how I roll lol).

NOw how to get it off, although Ill check the wires out.

Skoda really seem to have screwed up on thier choice of wire type.

Not sure what info there is in this area, but you can probably find quite a bit in the mk1 Fabia forum.

Any reccomendations on whether to get a complete new loom for the drivers door (and where?) or can it be taken out and the connector rewired?

I found the wiring between the door & the frame had many breaks in it, horrible wire type considering its going to be moved a lot.

You'll only get a new loom from a Skoda dealership parts counter, or TPS if your local one deals with Joe Public.

If it's like the mk1, there are a few separate (different coloured) plugs on the end of the door loom, which can be disconnected from the corresponding sockets in the A-pillar, albeit fiddly to achieve.

Having done that, you could extract pins and repair with proper repair wires - usually yellow wires with pre-crimped terminals - or just cut the existing wires close to the connectors, and solder in some more flexible wires, insulating the joints with heatshrink sleeping. Then find a convenient point beyond the door bellows to reconnect your new wires back into the door loom.

If I were you I'd email Mike at [email protected] with your Reg number, and ask him what a new loom would cost. You'll not find a better price or a more helpful fella. Armed with that info you can better judge the pros and cons of repair versus replacement.

OK cheers, Ill ask MIke although if its anything like the pricves I googled earlier then ill likely be going the repair route given that Im an electronic engineer type with a steel zip tie around my wallet :)

BTW - is there a guide to the wire sizes and colours and whatthey do anywhere?

You can access the wiring diagram via erWin Skoda, which costs under a tenner for an hour's use.  With your steel cable tie situation you might want me to have a look for you and produce a little list though. What year is the car?

A quick browse suggests they've gone to a single 28-way connector at the A-pillar? That should make it easier to hunt down the wiring info.

And two key connections to address your "is it the microswitch or the wiring" question are the brown/yellow 0.35mm² wire going to pin 4, and the brown 0.5mm² one on pin 16 (though that would cause more problems than you're seeing if bust, I think).

its a 58 plate,

I emailed MIke but hes away right now.

yes its a single connector, several of the wires are broken or about to break so I can see myself replacing all the wires. They may not go back in using the same colours.

I have yet to investigate if I can remove the individual connectors out of the plastic housingm, if I can do then  Ill replace the entire length, I dont quite fancy just patching existing bad wire.

The drivers window no longer auto opens/closes but does work via the door switch, the left mirror does not move - so I do have more problems - but as long as it locks then Im in no hurry lol.

Cheers.

You'll probably find there's one or more sliding latches in the side of the connector, then you tend to need a pin extractor tool like this:

Pin extractor.png

Ha, Mike is away quite a lot, bad timing, he used to be the parts guy on Audi Sport but these bandits/protectionist bad people bumped him and got the parts guy from Crewe Audi to be the parts supplier of choice, who is claimed to give brilliant prices - unless you know otherwise, after being trusting and buying parts I now know otherwise and me and a couple of others keep rubbing this in when someone posts about buying Audi parts and then they get directed to Crewe Audi by that forum's "staff" - we like causing trouble and I've even questioned that site's admin about them doing what turns out to be making false claims about "brilliant prices for Audi parts" - so far no replies or any other action taken against me, but there is time!

Edit:- if it helps, Laser Tools sell an extractor like that, when I was retro fitting front parking sensors to my S4 I was looking for an even smaller version for the next connector size down, but failed so just used drawing pins and very small drill bits etc!

Another Edit:- you probably know this, but if not, always stagger wire joins so that the harness does not become too rigid after your repair work, and as said join back into the fixed harness well away from the door hinge point.

OK, I guess Ill take a better look atthe weekend - the extractor sould be esay enough to replicate, if not thereis always ebay.

NOw to root around for some replacement wire too lol

I can try to find more details of the pinout and wire sizes of that 28-way connector tomorrow, if you like.

If you have it available yes please, but dont go to a lot of effort for lil ol me.

Didn't get round to that yet, but did come across this guide whilst looking for other things at the weekend:

May be useful to you?

Flicking through the endless pages of wiring diagrams with a little help from "ctrl-F" it looks like there are probably 4 different wire sizes 0.35, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5mm².

The latter two sizes being for door speaker on pins 21, 22; and main power/ground on 24 and 25.
