Mk 2 or Mk 3?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Apologies if I'm asking this in the wrong part of the forum - conceivably it could go in 'Buying a New Skoda' or equally the Mk3 forum but I thought I'd ask here as there's perhaps more likelihood of having experience of both the Mk2 & the Mk3.

I'm on my 3rd Octavia at the moment - an early Mk2 FL vRS CR Tdi - and it's getting to the point where I'd like to swap it for something newer.

I've been looking around at new/PCP deals and it seems that due to the modifications required for the new model year, they aren't taking orders at the moment, and besides, the prospect of a PCP deal doesn't entirely appeal for a number of reasons.

So, this has had me looking around at used prices and some of the earlier Mk3 vRSs are geting to be relatively affordable albeit with quite high miles for their age.

However, it's been suggested to me that it might alternatively be worth my while taking a look at one of the last of the Mk2s with as many of the toys and as low a mileage as possible instead.

Mine is pretty basic in terms of extras - ie no factory nav, Maxidot, manual box etc so it'd be nice to get a bit more kit, as well ideally as getting a DSG-equipped TSi as my last pre-FL Octy had the petrol engine and I miss the extra urge.

Therefore I wondered whether anyone else had had the same thoughts and if so, what you decided to do? I'm not wanting to shell out a vast amount - especially if it is a Mk2 - but equally don't want to go too cheap as I hope to keep the car for a while.

Any thoughts very gratefully received!

Cheers,

Dave.

I don't a VRS so my comment Dave would only be on general terms regarding cars ... The chances are, by the sound of it, that a late Mk2 or the Mk3 you'd be looking at would only be months apart in age and maybe a year at most...

Going by that scenario I'd be tempted to go for a Mk2 with the lowest mileage and packed with as many toys as you can find... Run out models do tend to be loaded to make them their more attractive to potential buyers rather than having thousands lying unsold as everyone wants the newest toy in town ....

The probkem is performance wise ... I don't know if the newer model would have an improved performance or suspension etc over the Mk2 that would justify going for a high mileage car... The Octavia's are pretty bullet proof and whilst 40,000 miles isn't a lot in the grand scene I'd rather buy a car with 50-60,000 miles on it than one with 90-100,000 miles especially when you're talking of keeping the car for a while..... I guess to though that this does depend on how many miles you're doing in a year in it...

Hopefully someone with experience of the VRS will be able to offer specific help...

If you have a mk2 fl I personaly would bother with a mk2 or a mk3. A mk3.5 would be more of a upgrade.

The mk3 is a nicer car but from what ive seen its like Windows, you always want to jump a version lol

I had a mk3, not a vRS though, on a PCP. When it became apparent that it wouldn't be worth keeping at the end of the deal and that I didn't wish to pay the money Skoda are asking for a mk3 vRS. I got my MK2 vRS TDi. I absolutely love it. Much prefer the slightly smaller MK2. Not sure why but I just do. Mine is a one owner 2010 model with full Skoda service history and had 90k miles when I bought it. I have recently put it through its MOT and it sailed through with no advisories or minor fails at all. The tester actually commented how good it was and that it had been looked after well. Go for the best MK2 you can get is where my vote would go. :-)

I was in a similar position to you 2 years ago. I like to keep hold of my cars for as long as possible so didn’t want anything with high mileage. My budget was £10k. In the end I went with my head, upped my budget and bought a mk3 VRS tsi. Much preferred the more aggressive look, the interior is so much nicer and it’s quicker! So for me it was a no brainer.

good luck in your hunt for a new car! Exciting times.

I bought the best FL Mk2 TSI I could, and it was still cheaper than the cheapest Mk3 TSI

Thanks all for the replies and sincere apologies for the tardy/lack of response before now - personal circumstances have made it difficult to access the forum.

Suffice it to say I went a bit leftfield in the end and got a 3.6 Superb Mk 2 - a lot of car for the money which won't be getting used for commuting due to the wallet-wilting mpg when used as Skoda intended.

I did  a lot of soul-searching along with web and dealer visits but just thought having a bit more space and not paying so much for it might be A Good Thing.

i came very close to getting an early Mk3 Octy but in the end the lure of a mad V6 and all wheel drive swung it, not to mention the huge grin brought about by piloting a proper sleeper..

Thanks again for taking the time to reply anyway - Briskoda is the most helpful and resourceful place to gain advice and knowledge and it's always gratefully received.

Dave :)

Congratulations on the new motor, would be nice to see some pics.

Sounds like a bit of a beast to be honest. And if you can stomach the mpg and road tax costs then why not.

Enjoy the new motor :-)

Not from Bedford, I hope!

Thanks - not really had much of a chance to enjoy it as yet because as mentioned previously - until I win the lottery or become best friends with an oil sheikh the sums just don't add up for weekly commuting.

I'm looking forward to engaging with it at the weekends though where it'll come into its own as a very capable and spacious family car.

Couple of pics attached - the first shows the old with the new - ie the Octavia RS I traded in with its replacement and the second the Superb in its natural environment.. :D

Cheers,

Dave.

PS - not from Bedford..

Good! There's a dealer in Bedford that seems to snap up every V6 Superb on sale then add 20% to the cost :O

Is that right..?

Well, I’m glad to say that mine was from a lot further north than that and not ludicrously pricey either so fingers crossed I did ok.. ;-)
