Your most unreliable car?

Featured Replies

Most unreliable car I've owned... a Land Rover 90 Turbo Diesel that I had for a few years. Leaked like a sieve (water into the cab, oil and coolant out onto the road), had intermittent electrical fault that meant it wouldn't start sometimes until I waggled the earth lead connection to the battery, and the brake master cylinder leaked fluid (until I replaced the seals, anyway). And to top it all off, the gearbox mainshaft broke (input splines sheared off), which left me stranded and having to call out a recovery service to get home.

By contrast, my Octavia RS has had quite a few annoying faults, but it's never actually left me stranded. Even when a coilpack blew, it still managed to limp the couple of miles to the garage under it's own steam. Although it's had a range of annoying gremlins: lambda sensor failure, sticking dump valve, central locking not working (intermittently) on one door, electric windows deciding not to work (and then working the next day), broken exhaust, electrical interference from the engine on the radio, and the mysterious loss of power that seems to have affected lots of other cars. :-(

Most spectacular and inexplicable gremlin: just after getting the tyres replaced the central locking and electric window system just stopped working. Completely. I could lock/unlock the drivers door with the key, and could open/close all the windows by holding the key turned in the lock, but that was it. All the internal window switches and door lock buttons stopped working. Left it overnight, and next morning it was all working fine. Apart from one door, which still fails to unlock sometimes... Sigh.

Not as good as I was hoping, to be honest. I guess I'll keep my RS for the forseeable future since I can't afford to replace it just now, and when it's on song it still feels fantastic to drive. But I doubt I'll go Skoda for my next car unless they improve the reliability. When I got the RS it was a choice between that or a Honda Accord Type-R. I think that Honda could be getting my money next time.

David.

Listen to this then Skoda Octavia turbo deisel. Clutch, clutch pedal mastercylinder brake pedal master cylinder, door lock cables, central locking four times rear screen washer not working sump drain plug seized sump off gearbox leaks water leaks air con pump and now turbo blown what a pile of crap this is my 373rd car it has cost me a fortune it will be replaced asap

Worst was a Rover 400 (nee 45) (Loved the brand, loved the car but 13 times back in 6 months). An L Reg Ford Fiesta 1.3 Lxi and a stillo 1.9 JTD Active were as bad.

Best for reliablity Fabia SDi - but soooo slow

Most Loved Rover 216Gsi - but not that reliable. What a car though.

Current Fabia VRS hasn't been perfect. Mainly niggles such as rear brakes squaling, trim issue, Radio failing, rear 3 point seatbelt warning light sticking. Shame as dynamically it's the only car that beats the 216Gsi

373 cars, what in gods name do you do with them and how old are you!!

I've only owned very reliable cars: three Hondas, a Subaru and a Skoda. The Octy hasn't had so much as a rattle in 75k kms.

So I'm expecting my new Fiesta ST to become my most unreliable car ever... :D

Don't say that. I'm picking up a new ST from the dealer tomorrow!:)

Well, here's one for you: I got my first rattle driving it out of the showroom... :o:D

Apparently it's the same one that almost every new ST seems to have, so I'm having that fixed when the opportunity arises.

Seriously, I knew what I was in for and wasn't expecting bomb-proof Japanese or Skoda-style reliability. But it's so much VFM here in NL - and such a hoot to drive - that I couldn't be bothered.
