Traffic Sign Recognition

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have a 67 plate Laurin & Klement and I thought it had traffic sign recognition, but having owned the car for a couple of weeks it is clear that the speed limits that are being displayed are being pulled from a database and not being dynamically parsed from actual roadsigns. Does anyone know if the 67 L&K is supposed to have TRS as standard or whether it was an option?

Cheers!

When I got my 67 plate L&K, he basic model did not have traffic sign recognition. I went for the following options:

-  Smart Light Assist with Lane Assist and blind spot detection

-  Travel Assist with Traffic Sign recognition and display

-  Rear-view camera

The traffic sign recognition works reliably most of the time (for example, it will read the dynamic motorway signs)

So it's not fitted as standard. That's a shame, I thought it was (and it seems the salesman thought so too as he told me it had it). Never mind. I wonder if can be added as a firmware update as I imagine the camera it uses is already installed for other functions.

I've been  very surprised recently how much the sales people don't know about the cars they are selling. They often haven't got a clue about extras available.

Now when it comes to doing the finance they are very clever indeed.

Mine didn't have TSR when I bought it but it's been activated (along with some other changes) via VCDS.  If you don't have VCDS, there's a map of members who may be able to help in return for some beer tokens.

I find TSR useful, but not always correct.  For instance, it can incorrectly pick up signs on minor roads next to dual carriageways and it'll tell you the limit is 30mph when the correct limit is 70mph.

It does usually pick up temporary or motorway VSL signs.  On the Brecon Beacons, the limit past Storey Arms is normally 60mph, but 30mph from Friday afternoon to Monday morning when temporary signs are opened.  Before I had TSR, the temporary limit was, of course, not shown on the sat nav.  It's handy that the limit is shown on the display in front of you as it's not so easy to check when it's on the sat nav.

I went to Lithuania earlier this year in the Superb and TSR recognised the lower limits when it was raining in France and Germany and also in Poland  the 60kph limit from 11pm to 5am in towns.  I'd never seen a no overtaking sign in the UK, but in mainland Europe they're in common use and they were picked up by TSR and it correctly ignored those with a plate below to show the restriction only applies to lorries or vehicles towing.

I've set a visual warning if I'm more than 6mph (or 6kph if using kilometres) over the limit.  It would be more useful if this was a percentage as 6mph over the limit is a less of an issue at higher speeds.  I didn't set the audio warning as SWMBO would nag at me each time it went off!  Not that I exceed the limits, but when it's picked up the wrong limit she'd assume TSR is right and I'm wrong.

My Commander-In-Chief makes the same complaint about the speed warning function :D
It's really good to hear that it's something that can be activated, as it is I'm waiting for the dealership to organise the installation of a rear view camera because it was advertised as having it but it didn't.

I'll have a look for the map of helpful people with VCDS (I've never had a VW group car before, so I'm still very much on the learning curve!).

Thank you!

ur salesman must've got confused with the "other traffic" feature - TMC - Traffic Message Channel
TMC gives u traffic updates based on the navigation route.

TSR can be activated via VCDS/OBDEleven, provided you have the right Camera hardware.

TMC can also be activated, if required.  Though i hear it can provide a crappy service depending on the country, for example here in Oz its shyiit.

Off topic, but yes indeed!

No matter what the brand, I’m sure the sales seminars they attend these days focus almost entirely on selling loans: that’s where the money is. ‘Car’ companies have become finance businesses side-lining in some car manufacturing. They don’t actually want to sell cars anymore; in fact, I’ve encountered dealers positively allergic to the prospect.

On topic: yes, I chose the TSR option. As said above, it works pretty well and – from memory – is a fairly low-cost option on L&K, so definitely worth it.
