1.0 engine thoughts

Happy Octavia 1.0TSI owner here. 20k miles+, long term average is around 5.5l/100. So 51mpg. Got better all the way through to 15000kms, now it's levelled off.

It is *not* slow by any means; third will see you well past 120km/h if you wish and it sings all the way to the red line.

Lots of tricks to get the consumption down and keep it there and they seem to work. In comparison, the wife's Fi - mainly round town - currently shows an average of >7l/100.

The first time I've felt even vaguely underpowered was last week on the way up north with 30C, climate, and a full boot. I also don't like the relatively high gearing of 6, it means I'm pulling <2000rpm at 50mph (standard speed limit here) so there's not much pickup available. Dropping a cog or three for an overtake is not the biggest chore - I've found 4 works well, with 3 if it's tight.  Zero complaints that it's "too small", I find it a really good fit for the size of car. Most of the time I'm pootling to Helsinki anyway, and at 120 it's really nicely refined and returns just short of 6l/100; the country lane trip up north gave me a 4,5. 63mpg fully loaded and with climate ain't shabby, for a petrol Octavia.

Small displacement turbos suck in the real world - whatever the EU mpg numbers might suggest.

I don't fully agree - I have a barge of a Superb with a tiny(for the size of the car!) 1.4 tsi engine and it performs well and my overall average is just under 46mpg wheras the official figure is 47.9 mpg. ie The real life figure is less that 5% adrift fom the official and I don't spare the horses.

Where things fall apart slightly is when you fill them to the roof with people and luggage - my mpg dops by 10

The 1.0 is on my radar re future car.

Can’t help noticing most manufacturers are going for these  1.0 and 3 cylinder engines and I just find it very difficult to understand the strain on these small engines  and longevity of pulling a load  in some fair sized vehicles.i understand it reduces pollution and emissions and are economic to run but just find Hard to take it that these little engines can work so hard and last.

1.4 TSI seems as economical as the 1 or 1.2 litre so not so sure as to why they are so popular other than Skoda etc seem to ask for less margin on them but you have the power when you might want it.

0.9 litre Renault engine served me well for 70k miles in 3 years.  Quite torque and would cruise quietly at indicated 75 etc.  NOX was good on that engine but some engine, like the Ford ecoboost, have fairly poor NOX ie almost half as bad as similar power diesels, so they may get restricted on city access in the near future like the diesels.

Very happy with the 1.4 TSI, genuine 55 mpg average. 0-60 in 8 seconds, what is not to like.  When there is more EV systems on there ie front wheel energy recovery and drive I would be happy to see the engine drop to 1 litre or even 700 ccs or so ie twin cylinder 75 horsepower with similar EV bust power.  70 mpg maybe.

^^^ But the 1.4 TSI with ACT or without are another discontinued VW engine as the 1.2 were and the 1.4 TDI,  when the testing is done correctly the emissions turn out to be 'questionable'.

John  I really like the 1.4 as well but it's discontinued in the body style I wanted. The 1.0 is in comparison a "seven stone weakling" to your Charles Atlas.
