Thinking of upgrading the sound system

Featured Replies

sounds good, if i swap the headunit, i take it the std cd autochanger wont work?

I believe the standard CD changer is actually a Panasonic, so thats about the only chance of getting it to work - unless someone like Audioleads do a conversion loom.

Blanchie' date=' The trouble is with other VAG head units is that the illumination colour will be different :([/quote']

Bogger :( , ta

When I first picked up my octy, I hated the stereo, looked on here and trimmed back the water membrane, then stuck sound deadening over it to stop it flapping, a good layer behind the speaker made a decent difference as well.

Then got bored so chucked an old alpine I had in, better still, then some mbquart componants with an amp, even better, then a sub even better.

Then wanted my carpc back so installed that, alpine sound processor and played with time alignment and phase and the sound is just another level now.

Now fallen well and truly down the slippery slope:mad:

I really do think though to make a difference you need to change the headunit, the standard one is not really up to the job of making decent music, just making a noise.

All imo of course!;)

What does trimming the membrane involve? I'm not keen to have speakers full of water, and I assume if you don't get it right, either you will get a wet interior, or the cut bits of membrane will just buzz? Anyone taken pics?

Nick, there is a sticky in the ICE related forum on here.

Hmmm I would have thought the little flap would just buzz in an annoying fashion. I'll give it a go tonight - got the wrong car at work today :)

I'm also waiting for someone else to try it first ;)

I cut the liner on my doors but in a sort of U shape so the flap still hangs down and covers the back of the speaker.

No problems with water or vibration

How big was the "U", DrZ?

Request:- Can whoever does this mod next take a photo, please ?

I changed my headunit to a Kenwood Mask old thing but it was much better even with the std speakers. I built a false half floor in the boot to put in an amp and mount 2 x alpine 8000 bass tubes. Plus re-cabled all speakers and put quick release connectors on the false floor so i could remove it quickly to save annoying the wife.

I have never noticed the Parcel shelf rattle nor any vibration from the cuts in the front door membrane. Personally i like loud good quality sound, however had to pack the boot with sound proofing to stop people hearing my music as loud outside as i could inside.

Imo any change is an improvement.

Well I'm sorry I didn't take any pictures, but I cut the two sides and bottom of a square about an inch across. It does indeed improve things, mainly in that it allows you to run the stereo at higher volumes without distortion.

I sort of bent the little flap created outwards to leave it pointing slightly out into the door cavity. No doubt it will bend itself back again, but the material is so soft, I can't imagine it causing much of an obstacle to the air.

Only just noticed this reply after you have already done the job , but it was about a couple of inches on each side.

I was changing the speakers at the time as well , so I couldn't do a "before and after" comparison but the theory is valid and enough people had reported an improvement so I thought it was worth doing.

i recently replaced my HU and speakers..i put in a jvc avx44 HU which is pretty cool along with focal polyglass 6.5" components. These are pretty shallow and fit fine. DLS also has a reference series shallow 6.5" components. the sound when connected to the amps and sub is truly amazing, one of the finest. kept the orginal blaupaunkt 5.25" for the rear, but when my budget permits me i'd love to put in a set of components in the rear too, though not necessary if driving single most of the time.

Two and half years late buddy ......but thanks :)

Oops ! :)))

sorry to hijack the thread..... in regards to the not very much space for behind the stereo! has anyone got any tips for what to do!

tried this weekend to put my pioneer dvd/sat nav unit and could not get it to fit at all.... pioneer loom is really long and has a lot of wires and a big black box!

any ideas of how i could get the wires to move somehere else? or even is there a bit at the back i could cut away to make more space?

thanks all

chris

when fitting my pioneer dvd player (double din) in mine i found that i had to cut the gray plastic away where it seperates the stereo compartment form the heater controls this allows more room in there for wires
