old type timing chain tentioner found , damm

just changed the oil on my vrs tsi octavia and took the bung out to check the tc tentioner , found it to be the old type ,,,,dam!!!
what sort of price am i looking at for the parts to do this job for the revised type , my vw mechanic wants £200 labour whatever
i may need a new side cover will i as ive heard it bends , has anyone done one without changing this cover , might change the chain aswell if its cheap but not holding my breath

The chain cover is glued on with some serious stuff from the factory and they usually bend upon removal. It's not worth the risk reusing it. I had both chains, tensioner and all guides replaced with the latest items when my engine was repaired a few months ago by a VAG independent garage after tensioner failure. The parts were around £500+VAT from TPS. There was a tube of sealant that was £35+VAT alone!

heres a pic or 2 of mine through the hole , it doent really look that extended and with 90k on the car should i take the plunge or just keep running it and see , i got the car cheap at 3k aswell beautiful vrs estate 200 horses aswell , just his daft issue when it should have been on a recall

Mine is a 2010 and it let go on the previous owner over the winter at just shy of 93k miles. At £3k for a TSI vRS, that's a bargain. Just wait until it kicks itself in the nuts then. :cool:

I bought a petrol vrs 10 plate about 2 weeks ago, no idea if it has the old tensioner, as the history doesn't say so. I am assuming it doesn't, it's going in on Wednesday, £270 i'm being charged for the tensioner and labour. Pretty good if you ask me.

Mines booked in now .genuine parts vw specialist  £410 if it needs a chain it will be a lot more ...the old tentioner stretches the chain .mines on 90k so fingers crossed .

Can you just change the tensioner? Thought it goes together with chain ... my 10 plate has 40k , got it with low miles, had to fly to Northern Ireland for it but well worth it.

Only the tensioner? It seems a lot..why do they charge so much , the thing itself it’s cheap..

They have to get right in the engine, my garage ordered the wrong part so I'm still waiting.

just had a new updated tentioner fitted with new cover and oil  , all in for £400 but now ive got a rattle for about 2 seconds on cold start up , im sure it didnt do this before with the old tentioner fitted , any ideas , after starting it and turning it off the starting again it doesnt do it , only the very 1st cold start

Well, they could play with the locking spring, so the tensioner without oil pressure at the first cold start can not not move at all.

 

or, what is worse, they have done something to non-return valve at bearing saddle of camshaft adjuster or its control valve with anticlockwise thread.

Don't know what you mean ...it only does it the once at 1st cold start .after that fine .

The mechanic that did it says they all do it and it's the oil that runs back from the upside down filter ? 

I'm 100% sure it didn't make this noise before with the old chain tentioner on

What a coinicidence ...

 

"they all do it" this is not true, I rather say it is a lie

 

"it's the oil that runs back from the upside down filter" This must not happen. What to do to resolve the issue? Let him to check the o-rings on the pin under the oil filter

That looks like another strip down for this job?

**** sake, what does this mean? Go to dealer and pay more but be safe or to a independent and take your chance???

if something is wrong means is worse than before... and he spent 400.. I hate this, you try doing something right, spend money and end up with more problems. That’s crap

My garage says the old tentioner is on a ratchet mech and cannot go back in .as for the new type it works on oil pressure .he could press it in manually .not like the old one it was solid. 

The car is back in now having the sump removed and pick up pipe cleaned out .

I'm confident it's just that .....new tensioner is oil pressure fed
