A photo would be handy to see what part of the car your referring to! Thought you wanted to polish the exhaust tips but sounds like you are talking about window surrounds or possibly the front grill?:o

Window surrounds

How old is the car, is tarnish from the pre wet salt they know use in the winter (sal spread on road which is dampened with brine had its distributed).  Auto Glym super resin will remove that

I had a Syperb mk2 that had the window ‘chrome’ surround damaged when it was in for service by leaving Traffic Film Remover (TFR) on it too strong or too long in sunlight. Some polished out but some did not ending up with all the bright work around the windows being changed at the dealers expense, quite a job I’m informed - windows out, door cards off etc.

I'm always wary of these road side hand  car washes due to the aggressive chemicals they use, just look at the brake calipers on cars that use them regularly. Both my cars are only washed by hand by me and they look much better for it though it can be a chore.

Hope you get it sorted it may just be tarnish on the plastic coating.
