Haldex Fault codes - 00448 Updated

Featured Replies

Well my much loved and trusty Superb 4x4 was in to the local Skoda dealer for its MOT last week and I happened to check my Carista app for faults and was disappointed to find code 00448 Haldex pump.  I brought this to the dealer's attention and was advised that "code readers are unreliable and throw up codes that are often not detected on their system...."

Nonetheless I asked for a diagnostic check (in full knowledge of the exuberant charge....!) and as expected they did find a fault which they claim was traced to water ingress on the pump cable connector.  It was dried/cleaned and the code cleared.  I should have checked Carista on collection but it ended up being the next day and Carista was now showing 01324 Control Module for All Wheel Drive to my further disappointment.  Speaking to the dealer, I emailed a Carista screenshot the same day and finally got hold of them today for an update.

They claim they don't recognise the fault code on their systems and require to carry out their own diagnostic check at another 1 hour labour at £80..... !?

Now - surely a fault code is a fault code and would I be right in saying the same Carista code would show up on the dealer diagnostics ?

I pointed out the wealth of information online quoting the 'Haldex Repairs' website as an example but the dealer contact maintained the position that the technician and their systems don't recognise the code....

Of course, they will have to check out diagnostics if the car goes back, and of course Carista isn't a Skoda dealer system but I am basically telling them whats wrong and I am not convinced what they are saying is corrct.

I am now gearing up to the discussion of getting a contribution for repair if indeed the pump/ECU are faulty.  Car is not long out of warranty, full dealer history and Haldex was serviced at my instruction last year at 30k miles.....  If I hadn't pointed it out last year I know for a fact it wouldn't have been done (another story!)....

Anyway, any feedback welcome, in particular on the codes.  Makes me think I need to be finding a good indie VAG/Skoda specialist going forward....

Bet they never took the pump out and cleaned the gauze which if you check in this post about haldex problems here
Have had this happen at dealer with mine and they changed pump but was under warranty.
Now do everything on the car myself...They don't even think there is  a filter in the Gen 4

It really annoys me that you take the car to "The Dealers" expecting the best possible service but end up getting a worse service than a back street garage....

Thanks, aye they definitely wouldn't have done that, just dropped the oil and refilled.

They also wouldn't have changed the replaceable filter unit which is detailed here... https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/guide-generation-4-haldex-trouble-shooting/

I will see what they say when the car goes back in as I don't have much option at this stage, don't have the facilities/time at the moment to do the work myself as much as I would like to give it a go.

Whoever does my next Haldex oil change will be getting handed a new filter to be fitted at the same time.  If the pump is goosed and needs replaced now, I will get this changed at the same time.  Will keep the thread updated....Cheers

Bit of an update on this one, Haldex posts seem to be cropping up a fair bit of late...!
End of July I had the code 00448 appear which the dealer cleared after cleaning the wiring connectors.
Soon after, fault code ‘01324 Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492)’ appeared.  I booked in to the again dealer but the opening line of "£80 for diagnostics check" despite only just being there the week before put me off so I cancelled and contacted a local VAG specialist for advice.  They stuck the car on VCDS and confirmed/cleared the code at no charge...(good start compared to Skoda dealer!).
All was well for a few weeks but I now have ‘00448 Haldex Clutch Pump (V181)’ back which I haven’t tried to clear, the recurrence suggests we have a problem!  Maybe the pump is on its way out after all....?   I am aware this could be – the pump, blocked pre-filter/filter or possibly the Haldex ECU going by what I have read.  Seem to still have 4WD available based on no front wheelspin even when provoked...?

Has anyone managed to have the pump replaced out of warranty with Skoda goodwill ?  My car will be 4 year old in November with full dealer history.
Problem is I will be hit with the usual dealer diagnostics charge before I start getting anywhere and the chance of goodwill is probably low.....is it worth the hassle ?!

Failing that I would go back to the VAG specialist for a repair, but the dilemma is do I just get the oil and filter changed and pre-filter cleaned and see if that sorts the problem, or bite the bullet and include the pump at the same time....?

Seems to be plenty of Haldex parts available on Ebay or via web searches - can anyone recommend a supplier for oil, filter and a pump ?

Pretty disappointing to have an issue like this on a car that has been well maintained and not high mileage.  I bet there will be hundreds of folk with Haldex of a similar age/mileage facing such problems.

I would go with oil, filter and clean mesh to start with then see how it goes.
Doing mine again on thursday night and will check vcds for codes then
Got parts from Ebay last year for about £65 so bought 2 sets then.

about £170 for a pump last time I looked

With your above link you should be able to check your pump when its offB)

Alex transmission (Volvo Fluid)  and Borg filter

Thanks for the info, will check out the parts link, looks good.

I should read my own links more often lol....re-reading I should be able to get an idea of the state of the pump with a multi-meter check across the connector, will investigate at the weekend.

How many miles since your last haldex oil/filter change ?  Do you have access to a lift or just ramps etc ?  Hope your oil change goes to plan !

Cheers Dave

I change it every 4th service so every 40,000 when I do my DSG
I am lucky and have access to a garage with MOT facilities and a lot of 2 post ramps so all's good B)

Nice one, that must make life a lot easier.

With the various Haldex queries posted on here of late I think you could do a roaring trade on Haldex service and repair !!  :D

Despite best plans I haven't managed to get under the car enough to get to the pump/connector to measure the resistance on the windings.  Thought it would be an easy job to see, was struggling to even see the cable coming to the pump.  The Haldex unit is actually quite a bit further from the back of the car than you would think.  Dont have decent ramps or a jack at the moment so might have to just get it into the local VAG garage and see what they find....

This is the type I use at my house for quickness. A WALLET EASY £31.50
Perfectly adequate for the job and with the extensions better for driving forward on to them for lower cars.

Ramps with extension.

Just to update this thread I decided to go forward with a new pump, filter and oil to restore my Haldex to what it should be.

Cutting a long story short, after a lot of informed reading on here and elsewhere, I sourced the parts online via Haldex Repairs and received some very helpful emails from the company owner.  I then sourced a local company who had knowledge of Haldex repairs and booked in with them for the work to be done.  They work on a lot of tuned/high end cars with Haldex systems and seemed well versed on oil changes and cleaning the pump strainer etc, and in truth were the only company that I found that seemed to have much knowledge on Haldex servicing.

I asked that they return the pump and filter for inspection and you will see the pics below.  The car has done 41.5k and already had a scheduled 'Skoda' Haldex service (oil change only) as per the book.  The state of the pump strainer is pretty much fully clogged and the filter is rather nasty.  I was pretty surprised by the state of it all and glad I had made the decision to replace both items.  It would be easy enough to clean the pump strainer and stick it back in but I wasn't wanting to mess around and risk further issues with pump failure.  I will do some checks on the pump to see whether it is fully dead or not when I get a chance.  My conclusion to this saga is that I will now have the Haldex oil changed and pump removed to clean the strainer at least annually, or every 10k miles approx.  Whether I include a new filter each time I am unsure, possibly every second oil change say 20k miles would be more reasonable.  I believe this approach will drastically help prolong the life of the Haldex pump and system.

Every owner with Haldex should bin Skoda's advice and seek full servicing elsewhere and make sure to include the filter cartridge.  Skoda have had no involvement in this repair and from now on will not maintain my Haldex system.  The company I used was Ecotune, Hillington, Glasgow and pending a trouble free 10k miles ahead I will be back for an oil change again next year.

As an aside, Ecotune are an impressive outfit offering VAG servicing and rolling road tuning with a four wheel rolling road.  While waiting I watched a BMW M140 being put through its paces to 400+ BHP.  A tad more than what my Superb could ever get near but it's got me in the mood for a remap/fix reversal........but first I shall let the wallet recover !!

from where did all that dirt comes in filter?

Most likely from the clutch pack in the Haldex unit.  When the clutch operates a certain amount of dust will be generated I imagine.

Sure, It is wet clutch. Like on motorcycles i think..
