1.8tsi blowing black smoke

Thanks Rayx. I’ll check the viscosity.

It’s booked in with Skoda next week to try and get to the bottom of it. And unfortunately I bought privately so no recourse for a refund. I’m preparing for the worst with either the scraper rings or valve stem seals being stuffed.

Still smoking after deceleration. No smoke on start up or acceleration. Oil is definitely being burnt in the engine for some reason though.

Do you know how much your burning yet?

I did a six hour drive yesterday And the oil level does not look like it’s dropped. I’m noting down mileage and oil top ups.

Not yet - I’ve only been driving locally about 10-20km/day since the oil change. I’ve been keeping an eye on the dipstick though and there’s no appreciable drop. Mileage is average (7-8l/100k). Good to hear your levels are stable for now.

Six hours could mean 360miles or just 100miles? Only the total mileage is important not running hours.

True it felt like 360 but was only 200 miles. I have a pen and notepad In the car and a keeping tabs on it.

I keep a 2l bottle of oil in the car, whenever the car needs topping up I make a line for the new oil level and write the mileage beside it. I seem to be about .5l per 5000 kilometres.

I just checked oil level again today not expecting to see much of a difference as I’ve only been driving locally. It’s dropped about half a cm to below min in two days. Damn. I’m in trouble.

Looking at getting the piston rings done?    Does it need the updated timing chain? I’m still a bit paranoid about mine at the min but it drives brilliantly.

Yep, both I reckon. Just created another topic around my predicament actually if you wanted to check it out. Like you, would also prefer to keep it somehow, lovely car to drive (always been a heart over head person with cars).

I’ll keep the saga updated here:

Yes, fill up to the maximum on the dip stick (do not overfill above the top elbow, between Min. and Max. markings/elbows on the dipstick is about 1 litre) and watch out when you come home. It will give you good view of oil consumption, though Skoda / VAG use weight method or just through diagnostics in guided function when they use oil height sensor on the sump.

Can not say anything about 1.4 TSI, but know some have similar issue too, mostly the twinchargers ... Definitely not that wide spreaded issue as with the EA888 ...

For me checking Daily and having a s/sheet with the details was more informative than an oil weight test.  This involved parking in the same place to ensure accuracy.

someone told me to try a thicker oil but I wasn't prepeared to test the theory knowing there was an issue.

Well, seems as though the smoke issue is still sticking around. It’s mutated slightly though - but it appears to be the oil burning. Has gone from a black sooty smoke to a greyer smoke since the oil change and engine flush. No loss in engine function/performance, and too early to notice if oil levels dropping.

It’s more apparent now not under heavy acceleration as it was with the black smoke, but after compression braking down hills and then once I accelerate normally (releasing the gases built up in the vacuum perhaps?).

Rang the mechanic who did it to get his thoughts - he just said ‘Looks like you’ve bought an oil burner!’ Reading between the lines, I think he’s just blaming it on the age of the car.

Booked in at a dealer now to see if the specialists can determine the root cause of the problem.

Sorry the oil change didn't fix it - I had basic diagnostics done on mine prior to hand back and nothing stood out as being a problem

Keep us posted with the outcome of yours.

Only a few local trips and the level is down to half on the dip stick! Back to the Skoda dealer I guess.

i would like to keep it if they will fix it but doubt they will want to throw any cash at it as they can auction it.

I have a 1.4 tsi to look at if I have to hand it back.

Official diagnosis from Skoda: Needs a complete engine rebuild for $10,000.

Skoda said I can still drive it for a while if I keep the oil topped up.

Dealer has refused to take it back as he sneakily sold it to me privately (I'm a mug). Am looking at legal options now. If all else fails, well sell it a wrecker.

With out re-reading all the posts I think you said he had been a dealer but wasn't any more and that he had sold you the car privately but, in an email that you have he says he is a trader.

That email would be the only thing you could try and use, although at the end of the day had it been a dealer sale you would have received a proper invoice when you paid (which I'm guessing you didn't get).

Out of curiosity, assuming you paid by card or cheque, what name was it made out to or what's on your bank statement - is it a name or business?

You could try selling with the known issue as it may be an easy project for a mechanic to drop in a used engine.

How much would it cost to get it rebuilt? In the UK there are places who will refurb your engine for £2000 and offer a 2 year guarantee.

Mine is returning to the dealer on Monday as I’ve gone through 1.5 litres of oil in 800 miles. They say they will fix it, I’m not convinced.

Sparshatts in Botley have said the oil consumption is down to a duff turbo. They are changing the turbo and I will collect on Wednesday.

They will I’ll mark the dip stick and I will take it back after 500 miles to check the level.

Does that dound plausible?

its used 1.5 litres of oil in 900 miles.

Typo

It sounds plausible they are doing that.

The Official Oil Consumption test requires new oil and filter, then that dropped after up to operating temperature then weighed, put back in and then the car driven 300km,

then oil dropped and weighed.

But topped up to top of Cross Hatch when at Operating Temperature, taped up dipstick and Filler cap and driven 500 miles will be good enough to see the oil drop over 500 miles.

The 'May use as much as 0.5 litres in 1,000 km (621 miles) is not an official figure, or an acceptable figure, so see how it all goes.

If I stop seeing oil spots on the tailgate it will be an improvement

Who will pay the new turbo and the swap job? Ask them, how many EA888 1.8TSI Gen2 they have ever seen ...

They are paying I have no idea how much a new turbo costs.

Will be be interesting to see if it fixes the oil consumption problem, if it doesn’t we are looking a a rebuild at their cost or the car is returned to them. Only had it 18 days

OK, in this case keep them paying, then test the car properly, make a lot trips  My opinion is clear, clogged drainage holes at oil control rings ...

Insist on long guarantee, until you make at least 3100 miles with oil consumption 0,5 litre, otherwise give it them back :)

Would you not see a white smoke if it was the turbo?

I’ve only seen a bit of blueish smoke once can’t really see any smoke even when accelerating briskly, time (and a couple of hundred miles) will tell.

Out of interest any ideas how much a dealer would charge for a new turbo?

New turbo part number 06J145701R, brand BorgWarner

New factory reworked turbo part number 06J145701RX, its is about 25% cheeper.
