Better security with face-off audio head unit?

Featured Replies

Just taken delivery of a beautiful Fabia vRS; was thinking of replacing the standard audio head unit with the Alpine radio/CD from my old car as it's a face-off one and should discourage opportunistic break-ins. Of course it won't look quite so good, but that's a lesser consideration..... Anyone have any thoughts or experience of this? Thanks.

I had an Alpine H/U and 6-disc changer in my Fabia, it looked better than the OEM H/U and it never got broken into :D

Ive heard alot of criminals break in just to see if by chance you have left the facia in the car still.

Yup - they're almost always in the glove box or under drivers seat apparantly.

I went ahead - actually looks fine - and the sound is much better :) Had to buy an extra bit of trim as the Fabia unit is a bit bigger that the Alpine. Worth doing though.

Just what i was thinking!

No-one will try to steal the standard stereo. But someone might nick an aftermarket one. Even if the face isn't on it they'll still break in and look for it. :thumbdwn:

In my case. I am using a cheap Pioneer CD/MP3 HU (cost only 60 pounds brand new), and I always take the facia off when I leave the car and leave the it in the glove box. So I am wondering if taking the facia off will actually higher the risk of scam to break into my car thinking they are nicking a expensive HU, soon they will find out it isn't.

Should I just leave the facia on, and let them know it is only a cheap one and don't worth the effort?

You can try second-guessing the mindless buggers until your brain fries, you'll still get broken into sometime, you just have to try and minimise the possibilities. The original Skoda unit couldn't take an mp3 player either - another reason for changing.

I always left the empty glovebox open in the old car so they could (maybe) see there was nothing there - the Fabia box has a permanent light on though if you do that :-(

You could take the bulb out - do you really need an illuminated glovebox?

Just a thought.

Good thought - can't think who WOULD need an illuminated glovebox. Just haven't quite got my head round taking out exciting revolutionary amenities from my new car yet.... :-)

As said above, your car is much less likely to get broken into for a standard head unit than for an aftermarket one, even with the face removed. Very limited market for selling a Skoda branded double DIN head unit.

I had my old car broken into for the aftermarket CD player even though the face was removed and tucked securely in the glovebox......

On the subject of an illuminated glovebox- don't you ever get CD's or anything out of it at night!? It would annoy me if it didn't light up!
