Is this oil ok for my Skoda

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

I have just started driving and have been kindly given my nans old Skoda fabia mk1, 1.4mpi year 2000. The oil light has come on so I am looking to buy oil, but I do not have the manual (my nan must have moved it/lost it before she passed away).

I'm looking to get something reasonably cheap as I'm a student. I found this oil on amazon and was wondering if it will be ok for the car?

It's this oil: Comma XFG5L X-Flow Type G Fully Synthetic 5W40 Motor Oil, 5 Litre

As you can see I've included a photo and the link on the amazon page.

Thanks in advance :)

That'll be just fine for a 1.4 MPI, however you can use any motor oil you like for topping up, have you checked the dipstick though because it must be bone dry if the oil light is on unless there's another reason?

Perfect.  To VW502 00,  for fixed service intervals.

Maybe look into ASDA if one near you.  Their ASDA VW 502 00  so 5w 40 FS might be sitting about the same price.

Maybe produced by the same producer....

Thank you that's really helpful. :) Yeah I checked the dipstick, the oil was just above the minimum marker

^^^? Are you checking it with the engine at normal operating temperature then stopped a few minutes?

Checking cold is OK before driving to see there is oil, but it is only the 1.2 44kw VW engine that shows as 'check when cold'.

The 1.4 mpi uses 10W/40 oil.

It's just for topping up, it'll be fine.

Yeah, I guess so.

There's no oil level sensor, so oil light means oil pressure problem (or false alert for it).

Extreme oil shortage could cause this, but likely there's another cause such as broken oil pressure switch, broken wire to this, or - worst case - an actual oil pressure problem.

If you still get warnings after topping up, check wiring and try unplugging the connector from the pressure switch; oil inside the connector tends to mean failed switch.

There's a guide to pressure switch replacement kindly produced by a forum member here, should be some pictures showing location etc if photobucket haven't screwed it up.

Probably too late but...

Oil (pressure) light coming while engine is running is potentially and often very serious. Continuing to run it like that is asking for a damaged or seized engine. Don't run it without topping up the oil! And if the problem doesn't go away (permanently) then ask nan when exactly did she last service it, by that I mean an oil and filter change? Many old people ignore regular servicing it could be blocked filter/sludged up engine.

Edit: sorry just noticed she's passed away....so if service history is unknown, I'd recommend an oil and filter change at least.

Did the oil light come on after a brisk run on a motorway 50 mile plus and then going off in normal driving after things have cooled off a bit? If so, it is more than likely that the sludge is coming off the bottom of the sump and clogging the oil strainer  and starving the engine of oil. Leads to catastrophic engine failure if run when the light is on, I know I had a con rod through the side of the engine on a Mk2 Golf GTi.

It's probably just the pressure switch, they are notorious for failing on the 1.4, 8 valve mpi. The engines themselves are a tough little unit. Bottom end problems are very rare.

Thanks everyone, I topped up the oil and the light went out :). My dad serviced it not too long ago

The oil must have been seriously low for the low oil pressure light to come on. That's very bad for the engine. Makes me wonder why the oil was so low because mine barely uses a drop between oil changes. Make sure it's not leaking.

The thing is is that according to the OP the oil was just above the min on the dipstick which is not seriously low. If I were her I would be watching things very carefully as I suspect there is another reason for the oil light being on.

Ah yes, good point!

For an MPI I'd use a much cheaper semi synthetic 10w/40 oil from Asda or any reputable supermarket brand. We must have done over 400,000 miles with four similar engines in Felicias and Favorits with no problems at all......just keep it topped up. If the oil light keeps on flashing or comes on permanently, then it needs investigating by somebody knowledgeable and reputable. It might be serious, it might be a minor fault. These engines can use a bit of oil, but that in itself is not a worry as long as you top it up and check it every two to three weeks until you know how much it uses.
