Apple car play- unreliable

Featured Replies

I recently made the move to iPhone SE and i was excited that I’d finally be able to use car play and the various apps that Skoda offer.

However, it is one of the most unreliable and inconsistent pieces of technology I have ever used.

Imagine the scene: I switch on the ignition, turn on the infotainment system, connect my phone via the official apple cable, and it says connected and car play starts by itself . A few seconds later “phone disconnected”. But it’s not. It’s still very much connected by the cable and hasn’t moved. A few more seconds and it says “phone connected” again, except this time car play hasn’t started by itself and I have to manually press “app” then select car play from the infotainment screen.  Now it will either remain connected or will disconnect itself again and I have to repeat the procedures above.

Other times when it’s been connected fine for an hour or so, and you’re happily recording the journey on the Skoda one app, it will disconnect and end the recording, but it won’t tell you, no. The icons have just gone grey and the whole thing is unresponsive.

Ive asked the dealer to have a look when it’s services next month, but is it just me who ha this problem? Running the latest iOS. Thanks!

Running the latest iOS.

Is that iOS11 or iOS12 beta?

iOS12 beta is supposed to have greatly improved Car Play and many other things.

I know its a cliché but have you tried turning it off and on again, and I mean your phone...

My wife has had a couple of issues with carplay in her car, and every time they've been cured by a phone reboot.

We all jump to assume the problem is the car, when generally its your phone that doesn't get rebooted for weeks at a time, and the minute you put a large or complex app to work, all sorts of funny stuff happens.

Have had this happen to me. Try a new cable.

I will give that a try- I should know that’s the fix having work in IT for many years, and having come from windows phone where a reboot became a refular  task I thought I’d got out of having to do that! :D

As suggested above, try a new cable.

Also, try cleaning out the part of your phone where the cable goes in. They're notorious for collecting fluff if you carry them in your pocket. Use something small and wooden like a toothpick so as to not damage anything. You'll probably find it's clogged up with fluff and works perfectly afterwards.

I'm now on the latest 12 public beta 7 release and Carplay stability has greatly improved. I used to face the disconnection earlier and was fed up of it, but can't complain much now.

Try a new cable as mentioned and I’m now running iOS 12 Public Beta 7 (been running iOS 12 since Beta 1) and it’s an enormous improvement over iOS 11. Also try resetting SmartLink to factory settings on the car radio. Coupled with turning off and back on again/deleting the car from the phone and trying the setup again should cover everything.

Does Waze work with Carplay in the Beta?

Not yet. I have heard that developers have seen early previews of Waze on CarPlay but it’s not there yet. I would guess it’s coming on the last Beta or it’ll wait until the release.

CarPlay is reliable.

iPhones are reliable.

There is a huge range of reliability with Cables, What is the effin point of connecting a £23k car to a £500 phone with a £1.99 cable?

OP has worked in IT too, bizarre!

Don't tell me you are one of these persons who buys gold plated HDMI cables and stuff like that :)

...in the digital world, it doesn't really matter - it works or doesn't.

Say a cable is bad just because it is cheap is a bit too generalistic.

i agree there are many lousy cheap cables, but if you shop around you can find cheap and good.

---edit--

BTW, this is the actual cable I am using (the shortest version) with 0 issues:

No Jaco, I don't - but I have been caught out enough times to know Buy Cheap=Buy Twice (at least)

Thanks for the heads on the Beta version of iOS.

Installed it with eyes wide open this morning, and seems to be fine so far.

3 hours in the car today with no dropping CarPlay connection (which  it has been doing up to now), so guess that it's an issue that's been addressed!

Have a great bank holiday weekend all,

Nick

Glad it’s not just me having issues!

A few things to point out for those who think it’s something I’ve done wrong,  in case it wasnt clear from my original post:

> This is a brand new iPhone SE running the latest version of iOS 11.

> I am using the official apple lightning cable that came in the box. This cable stays in my car permanently and is not flexed or moved around.

> Just  because “it works fine for me”  does not mean that someone who is having problems is wrong or stupid.

Thanks for for those who’ve provided helpful replies. I’ll wait until Skoda have had a look and report back.

You got it bud, hopefully you get it sorted out, and have it working as it should be.

Now I've spent a few weeks with CarPlay, even with it's mildly flaky connection issues I wouldn't want to be without it...and also understand that in the grand scheme of things, CarPlay is still in it's infancy, so there are going to be issues...

Cheers,

Nick

From the positive feedback regarding iOS12 beta being much more reliable I suspect this is an Apple problem not a Skoda problem.

Does Waze work with Carplay in the Beta?

Unfortunately not at the moment. I installed the latest Waze Beta through 'Testflight' and it's still not supported. It does appear that a few people have got a version of the beta that works on Carplay like SashaGrace said but that's not publicly available at the moment.

Expect that it will be available once iOS 12 releases in September, so a matter of a few more weeks.

At a guess Apple probably aren’t allowing distribution of apps using the new iOS 12 APIs via TestFlight yet, so probably those testing CarPlay builds are receiving builds via a different method.

Testflight used to be one of the tools to distribute test builds within Rovio ;)

...it got superseded by a different tool when Apple bought them.
