Canton Noise Cancelling Technology - how does it work?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to upgrade my Canton sound system by replacing the amp and speakers, but JL Audio advise me that if the car has noise cancelling microphones around the cabin this will nullify any sound improvements I wish to make. I've had a look around the internet but there seems to be a lack of clarity about exactly how Canton implement this technology, and whether it uses extra microphones or simply applies out-of-phase narrowband EQ filtering from the amp depending on the speed I'm travelling. This text sample is from the Canton technical manual (which I don't have but would love a copy), and it's very ambiguous. Has anyone upgraded the Canton system and run into any obstacles?

(for some reason it pasted two images of the same article and I can't remove the duplicate jpg. Sorry about that!)

The description doesn't say it's using microphones. But... the description could be misleading, or I'm misinterpreting it.

If it's using the speakers to play anti-noise, and if it doesn't use microphones, then I can only think it's working in open loop, without feedback. Then it needs the speakers to behave in the expected way. If the speakers change then the anti-noise will be wrong.

If it just changes the EQ on the music dynamically to boost frequencies that would be otherwise be drowned by the engine then it's maybe not such a big deal.

Sorry this probably doesn't help much. Have you tried asking Canton?

Thanks for your input. Yes, I've emailed Canton (Germany) twice and each time they say they only supply the amp and speakers and it is Skoda who fit the system and to whom I should address my questions. I have also emailed Skoda UK but have heard nothing back.

Can i ask why you want to change the Canton ? I would look at the Canton as my first thing to add on the options list .........

I find the upper midrange and treble sounds a little harsh on certain material, with some distortion. My first step is replacing the front door speakers with Audison Voce K6 and putting the new tweeters in the door space instead of the A-pillar. I'll post here the results when it's been done.

That would be good..... i have had a high end sound system fitted to a car of mine years ago and although the sound was very good the fitting of it and the ripping apart of the interior was somewhat of a pain, i have DLS amps, JL Audio sub and some Genesis speakers, and as i said it did sound very good but given the time again i am not so sure i would just rely on the upgraded system that the manufacturer has on offer.
