which diagnostic tool do i buy for a 1.6 tdi ?

Featured Replies

As title, there are so many out there for sale.

That might depend on how much or how deeply you need to use that sort of tool, for easy to use and lots of jobs Carista is fine, for more involved stuff VCDS is still top of the pile for DIYers who are serious.

Thanks for your prompt reply, car has gone into limp mode and i need to find out why, i retired from the spanners before computers took over, so it just needs to tell me where the problem lies.

I dont use a phone so it would need to read codes and display. Any links to one would be appreciated thanks.

I'd sorry that is the best that I can think of, the trouble can be that there may well be many OBD2 scan tools that are quite cheap, but they will only decode emissions related engine fault codes, what can be a lot handier is a scan tool that is VW Group specific as it will reveal many more engine codes and then there are the other VW Group specific ones that can decode all codes from all small controllers. It is just finding a point to stop at and still have a useful scan tool.  Gendan is a good diagnostic tools seller to talk to if you have any doubts of what a scan tool can or can't do for VW group cars       https://www.gendan.co.uk/

Edit:- hum, not much "mid range VAG specific" scan tools in Gendan's list now!

Many thanks  rum4mo, I see wont you mean.

I was recently eying up a icarsoft product, can't quite remember the actual part number but can't be hard to find. They do a VAG specific unit that has a bit of gumpf for around the £100 area. VCDS will run into hundreds but is worth it long term, if you are an enthusiast. The VCDS plugs in to a laptop, whereby the icarsoft is a self contained unit. I believe it is upgradable so a good second option, depending on the depth of your pockets!

Edit, its the icarsoft i908.

Now to make it work for its money?

Very true its about the same money for the injector, unless some one knows to any cheaper.

Xman, do you mean OBD11? its roman numerals for two, not eleven.

Oh, I got you... Not the standard OBD scanners that plug in to the OBD!! port. Doh!

Do you not had to re-code the new injector with a VCDS?

  • Author

no need to re-code.
