Variable boot floor worth it or not?

I realised I posted incorrectly. I should say with a full size spare wheel fitted replacing the original space saver, the lower floor does not fit flush but sits on top of the wheel

Perhaps I will need to check this again but with the full size wheel in the wheel well, the lower boot floor did not sit flush! Got me wondering now!

no you are correct it does not fit with a full size spare... its close though about 5-10mm

Love mine, wouldn't be without it!

Cracking idea and good for hiding stuff under.

let the air out of the tyre, it'll fit then

I'll get my coat...

Not entirely off topic, but I am in the process of buying a Mk3 estate with the variable floor and tyre repair kit. I am trading in my Mk2 Octy estate and thought about just transferring the full size (15inch) wheel into the new car. I assume the fitment of the Mk2 wheel is the same as the Mk3? but it's Interesting that there may be some issues with fitting full size wheel (perhaps mine will be smaller/ narrower).

Those who mention an issue with the strength of the variable floor, would it be an issue carrying a 30kg Labrador?

Best to put it on a diet just to be on the safe side!:notme:

Memo to Cakemonster might be a tad difficult to drive the car from the boot unless you are JAMES BOND 007 licensed to eat all the cakes (SPONSOR MR KIPLING).

unfortunately the rim sits proud of the tyre so the floor is 10mm higher than it should be with a dinky get-you-home spare. its not noticable with a standard boot but doubt it would work with the variable floor..

ill hold the door for you :giggle:

I picked the skinny spare wheel because I couldn't afford the variable boot floor and SWMBO weighs more than 75kg so I wouldn't be able to pop her in the boot!:tongueout:

FYI, the blocks that I made to support the shelf at the fold are 110mm.

I cut thrice and measured once to get them right...

I must be having a blond/grey moment. The full size spare does fit in the wheel well and below the variable boot floor. What didn't fit was the polystyrene (?) round thing which holds the wheel brace and jack as that sits proud in a normal size wheel but much lower in a space saver. You can of course choose not to have this and then get the variable floor. Apologies for misleading anyone

or you can cut it down to fit the full wheel ;)

A 16" 205 mm full size spare does fit properly. You didn't say how big your wheel is, but it's presumably wider than 205 mm.

Hi I'm new here, will soon introduce myself in the appropriate topic.

I have a variable boot floor in my Octavia 3 combi. Unfortunately the bracket, which makes the rotation between the up/down positions possible, is broken. It normally attaches just behind the rear seats. See the part up front in the attached image. Does anyone know where to obtain a spare one? Not able to find one at the standard car-parts-webshops.

You can’t just buy a bracket, you have to buy a whole side piece. I remade the bracket from alloy when I fitted mine.

Thanks Sasha, can you indicate where I could buy the 'whole side piece'? I'm very interested in a photo of your homemade solution! A metal plate with a slot welded to a piece of pipe could be an option.

TPS but they are about £90-100 each from memory. Sadly I don’t have an image of what I did, my Dad was supposed to take images as he was helping me but he deleted them! I used a piece of metal the size of the original plastic and JB welded a tube in to hold the long tube that supports the back of the floor. I had to guess really how to make it work as the parts supplied were smashed to pieces!

Had the variable floor on my last 2 Octy estates, and will have it again on the next (hopefully March next year). Very useful for holding nets, coffee trays (the cardboard type), an old sheet ready for tip runs, BIG handled wheel brace! (I'm weak...) etc....

  • 7 months later...

I have it too in my elegance estate and it's brilliant.

The only thing is that I struggle to lower it, raising it up is easy though.

It might be just me though ;)

I didn't think that the variable boot floor was something I needed until I went to see about getting a dog box fitted. It's on the list for the next car :)

Only thing that I'd recommend you do straight away if you get a car with this in it is to add a strong support underneath it where it has joints to fold back, otherwise it will collapse first time you put anything vaguely heavy on top of it and yes, I found out years ago that a full size spare wheel fits easily if you take it out the foam section and just wrap it in an old blanket or bit of bubble wrap to keep it from rattling around. I added the variable floor as an extra to my current car and it has proved indispensable to me given the amount of large and heavy items that I've had to carry in it recently setting up a new business venture.
