Upgrading Headunit to Columbus?

Featured Replies

So i haven't picked up my vRS yet so not 100% sure which headunit it has, its a 65 plate (2015) and has sat nav so im guessing its Bolero mib2?. Ive seen reports that i a Columbus mib2 is a simple plug and play procedure to replace the Bolero ....

http://octavia-rs.com/index.php/thread/25881-tausch-bolero-mib2-display-gegen-bolero-mib2-facelift-display/

is this the case or is the Columbus head unit in need of reprogramming before it will play nicely with my car?

  • Yes, that’s a MIB1 Bolero so you’ll need a radio unit and screen from whichever MIB2 you want to upgrade to (I chose Amundsen with 8 inch Columbus screen and this is getting popular as it’s much cheap

  • 5E0035864A is the part number for a MIB1 Amundsen. You have bought a Columbus screen 5E0919606. These are not compatible components. The screen is just a screen, the MIB1 Amundsen runs 240x400 resolut

The screen is plug and play on MIB2 units as they all run 480x800 resolution, but the headunit is a bit more complex. The connections are plug and play but there will be component protection and coding to do. Bolero’s do not have nav so it’ll be an Amundsen unless it already has a Columbus. If it’s a MIB1 Amundsen and you can’t be doing with the small screen then a Columbus would be a good way to go or as I have done, a MIB2 Amundsen. If it has a MIB2 Amudsen I would leave as is unless you really want the CD player back as the 8 inch screen is plug and play so you could plug the Columbus screen into the Amundsen and it’ll work with no coding required. I have an Amundsen with a Columbus screen and it’s great :D

Bolero is without Nav, so I suspect you have Amundsen.

You can replace the display (the headunit is in glove box and separate to the display!) I believe with the one you linked, or a Columbus screen will also work too I believe. Think @SashaGrace swapped to the Columbus screen.

Ah, ok wasn't aware that the 2 would possibly need replacing or that the unit in the glovebox was referred to as the headunit, i thought the headunit was just the 'screen' lol .

As fair as im aware the previous owner had the sat nav added as an optional extra, so does this still point to it being a Amundsen?

Yeah tbh all im interested in is the larger screen and the more sleek look

Not really, depends what model year it was. MY15 would be MIB1 Amundsen and MY16 the standard audio was MIB2 Amundsen. If it’s a unit that was a factory option it could even be a Columbus. I guess you have seen the car though and you would be able to tell straight away if it has the 8 inch screen. I don’t suppose you remember if the radio head unit in the glovebox had a CD drive or just a pair of SD cards do you? When you say sleek look are you wanting to install the glass display screen as in the link on your first post? If so this is a MIB2.5 Amundsen display and these are about the same price as Columbus displays and sporadically available on cars equipment for good money. Also plug and play but the APP button doesn’t work. It won’t do anything if you press it, but the blacklight works correctly.

Im pretty sure it had 2 SD card slots and defo wasnt 8" screen, it looks like this....

Yeah the glass display screen is what i like the look off, is there any disadvantage to these over the Columbus 8" screen?

Also does MIB1 and MIB2 refer to the unit in the glove box and what does MIB stand for?

It’ll have 2 SD slots if it has any kind of nav unit in it. The MIB1 Amundsen has a 5.8 inch screen and the MIB 2 Amundsen has a 6.5 inch screen. The MIB1 Amundsen has a CD drive, the MIB2 doesn’t so if the unit has 2 SD cards and no CD drive you have a MIB2 and you can plug in an 8 inch screen no problem :)

It can be quite hard to tell the difference between the 5.8 and 6.5 inch screens but hopefully this helps

MIB2 on top and MIB1 at the bottom. There is a slight difference in the thickness of the bezel. Once you pick the car up, take some pics and post them up. I’ll be able to tell you exactly what you have.

The screen you choose is up to you, there is no advantage to one over the other above personal preference. I wanted my backlighting to stay uniformly green as my car is MY14 with green backlighting everywhere. The MY16 cars have white backlighting on the steering wheel, so the mix of backlighting is less of an issue. I also prefer the soft keys and reduced glare over the FL glass panel but many prefer the sharper looking FL screen.

MIB is an initialism for a German term I don’t understand! The generations of units are split up and grouped. As the MIB1 Bolero and Amundsen have 240x400 resolution they are reduced to 5.8 inch screens. MIB1 Columbus and MIB2 Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus run 480x800 resolution and can run 8 inch screens.

Thanks for the info :)

Yeah i defo know it has sat nav so will be the 2 sd card headunit which is good news as whatever screen i get will be plug and play .

Hmmm thats a good point you raise about the colour lights of the dash matching the screen, i wonder how had it would be to either change the LEDs in the dash or the screen itself........im guess they could even be RGB LEDs in which case they might even be changeable through some hidden diagnostic settings

Not quite, perhaps I’m not being clear. If you have the smaller screen, 2 SD card slots and a CD drive then you have a MIB1 Amundsen and you cannot upgrade the screen.

When you pick up the car, post up a picture of the screen, the glovebox unit and a screenshot of the system information and then we’ll all know for sure :)

Ah i thought the 2 SD card slots didn't have a cd drive at all and it was only the 1 SD card headunits that had a CD drive?

No, the Bolero’s with no nav have 1 SD slot and the MIB1 has a CD drive and the MIB2 doesn’t. The Bolero MIB2’s are very plain as they just have a single SD card slot in that big DIN sized unit! For MY16 (MIB2) Skoda quietly dropped the CD drive on all but the Columbus units. It wasn’t welcomed by all people, but I haven’t listed to a CD in years. It’s much easier to stream music from the various ways that is possible these days :)

Its a 2 sd card only unit ....

Oddly as well the instrument lights on the dash are white on my model so the MIB2.5 Amundsen screen will match just fine

That’s a MIB2 Amundsen so an FL screen is a straight swap :) The dash and steering wheel on yours should have white lights and the rest should be green. The FL panel will have white lights and the rest will stay green which is exactly how the FL cars are anyway. Keep an eye out for an FL screen as cars equipment don’t have any in again but there’s a 2018 vRS breaking on eBay right now which may have the screen still on it. People will try and rip you off, don’t pay any more than £250. I paid £200 for my Columbus screen but I’ve seen people trying it on for £400 plus.

Thanks for the pointers, yeah theres a seller on ebay (bargainhunter3210 funnily enough) selling a Columbus FL and wants £450 for it.

Do these screen readily pop up for sale around the £250 mark then?

The joke about Mr BargainHunter3210’s screen is that it’s actually an Amundsen screen and not a Columbus one. I paid £200 for my Columbus one and I know of another member who paid £200 for an FL Amundsen screen. They come up from time to time. Check cars equipment as when they have them, they are £226 new. They don’t have them at the moment though. The part number you need is 5E0919605M :)

I have heard of cars equipment, is that an ebay seller or independent website?

So my best options then are a Amundsen FL or a Columbus like yours, i mean the Amundsen FL doesn't have any performance increase over the Columbus (just the glass like finish) and they both have the same size screens?

Edited by BlockABoots

http://www.cars-equipment.com They get a bad rap on trust pilot apparently, but you can take that as you will. Your options to change the screen begin and end with the pre FL Columbus (5E0919606) or the FL Amundsen (5E0919605M). If you want the 9.2 inch FL Columbus you’re gunna need a new radio to match it. There’s no real tangible advantage to having the FL Amundsen one over the pre FL Columbus. Some might consider the non working APP button in place of the working Traffic button and lack of soft keys as disadvantages but I have never pressed the Traffic button other than to test it worked and when I had an FL as a courtesy car I didn’t mind the lack of soft keys or the glare, or the fingerprints as I suppose I don’t have particularly greasy fingers evidently! Some haptic feedback when pressing buttons would be nice though. In the end I went for a pre FL Columbus because of the backlighting colour as I wanted it to look factory. It’s all about personal preference. That my screen was a keen £200 made it worth it too. I know of another member who bought a Columbus screen for £190. You might be a while looking though and then one will just appear at a good price. Search eBay for the part number, radio screen, media screen, navigation screen and terms like that as often they are listed under those terms. Also keep an eye for Octavia salvage and actively message seller and stripping whole cars and ask for prices on the screen. I got lucky in the end and was idly searching eBay and went in with Skoda Columbus screen and found mine £200 buy it now. It was 13:57 and it was same day post if ordered before 14:00. It came the next day and was installed into the car within minutes :D

Ah im glad you brought the app button issue up i had forgotten about that.

So on an FL Amundsen pressing the app button does nothing not even bring the traffic screen up which it replaces?. Has there been any discussion on why the app button does nothing or if it can be fixed?. Are the newer headunits installed with apps now then, surely they dont have Netflix installed ?? lol

It does nothing. It links back to SmartLink on the FL but the pre FL MIB2 doesn’t have the algorithm ready to do that. AFAIK you’re stuck with it. You can watch Netflix on a jailbroken iPhone via CarPlay. I watch Now TV & Prime on mine while stationary of course :)

you should try tvtap ;)

yes prices are very inflated for the 9.2" screen on fleabay

with the Smart Link does the phone have to be connected via USB cable? or does it work over BT?

Edited by JohnnyType2

is this the 9.2" FL screen? the code is 5E0919606D

s-l1600.jpg

That’s the Columbus FL screen. SmartLink requires a USB plug in which on the Octy would mean a visible cable but I have rerouted the cable to the centre console so it cannot be seen :)

I sent him a message asking about the screen and wing mirror covers,

he said £900 for the lot, HAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!!......i told him to do one

I said Car Equipment do them for around £250 when they have stock and can get the wing mirror covers from superskoda for £45!!!

Edited by BlockABoots

Just a heed of warning using Car Equipment, I attempted to order a screen from them twice but they didn't have the stock (despite the website saying otherwise) and took a while to let me know and refund me. I wasted about 2 months trying to get one from them before giving up and going down the ebay/breakers route. They are nice people and respond to emails - eventually - but it's obviously a fairly small operation.. I suspect the language barrier/response times is the reason for a bad rap. Just something to be wary of if you plan on sourcing it through them.

i sent him a message too and he wanted 950 because someone else was buying... he was very forceful. he wanted £800 for the screen and £950 for both so i said ill takeke the glovebox unit for £150 then:D
