Upgrading Headunit to Columbus?

Featured Replies

Yes most eventually this will be the outcome for now - just put the screen. But my idea is to keep the main unit and prepare it for use after warranty expires. There are only 3 years left so its worth it. But only if I can setup the device without it entering into the car or it is required to be connected at least  once so it enters into CP mode? I'm still interested to learn more about the whole process and after all I may decide to do it after 3 years. Subwoofer may be installed even if if is not original, since there are some casings fitted for octavia 3 trunk. And in columbus there is a control for subwoofer. Additional internal gps antena may be added. And it is still a decent update but I want to be aware about all possible outcomes and risks in order to decide if I will keep the main unit or just sell it right now.

And about the screen change do you think that somebody will actually notice that the plug is sliced. And about the buttons - isn't there any way to reprogram buttons for example NAV to open smartlink and TRAFFIC to open somethink like sound or it is hard coded ascii into some chip situated into the screen?

  • Yes, that’s a MIB1 Bolero so you’ll need a radio unit and screen from whichever MIB2 you want to upgrade to (I chose Amundsen with 8 inch Columbus screen and this is getting popular as it’s much cheap

  • 5E0035864A is the part number for a MIB1 Amundsen. You have bought a Columbus screen 5E0919606. These are not compatible components. The screen is just a screen, the MIB1 Amundsen runs 240x400 resolut

The radios are coded to the cars vin. The easier solution for you is just to pop the Columbus screen into the car and leave it all as it is. The screen is just a screen and nobody can tell if you’ve plugged a different screen in. The Columbus would get you some extra features (nav, HDD etc) but if you are concerned about warranty I’d leave that out and just use the screen. The nav and traffic buttons wouldn’t work, but the backlight still does, they just don’t do anything when you press them. No coding on the screen, just plug Columbus screen into Bolero and enjoy Android Auto on the big 8 inch screen :)

when you have a CP removed on the new unit it seems the old unit will no longer work, i cant use my old head unit while im waiting on pawel work his magic, so something is changed in the cars ecu as well.

subwoofer control will not work with anything other than a factory canton as the head unit uses optical out and this cant be used with any aftermarket sub or Digital signal processor. If you want aftermarket subwoofer signal The only option is to use an LC7i which can amalgamate the signal from the front and back speaker line outs and create a third line out,  so even if you fade you still have volume control on all speakers and the gain for the sub is controlled from a separate knob connected to the LC7i unit. It can be flush mounted on the dash for a factory look.

The canton sub woofer is really weak only 200w rms, my rear speakers are more than that. I've posted a few things ive found just searching around and also info from Pawel on what you can actually get from the head unit. Unfortunately there's no sub out...

So you are saying that the coding and the removing of Component Protection is actually done while the main unit is mounted on the car. It cannot be sent through mail and setup and than used on the car when returned. It is done for a specific car but not in general. My understanding was that the unit should be returned in the so called "virgin" state and when inserted into any the car, it does plug and play self diagnostic and getting to know with the specific car.

It is really interesting is there a way to reprogram the key map of the screen so to enable nav and traffic buttons to display something meaningful.

yes the guys who removed my CP had to have both the new head unit and new screen physically in the car to remove CP.

I dont think you can send it away

Is it true that the columbus system fits more data into same resolution but larger display - it somehow scales down graphic elements? If I use columbus screen on bolero system it won't show more it will just show same elements but bigger?

the 8" MIB2 columbus/amundsen screen does not work with the Bolero MIB1 head unit. You get sound but no picture.

I have a Bolero MIB2 with 6,5" screen and 800x480 resolution. And I will try to use a MIB 2 columbus screen with MIB2 bolero system. The input plug is a bit different on the screen so I will mill the missing slot for the plug into the plastic shell of the input of the screen - I don't want to slice the plug from the car cabling. I was just saying that when this columbus screen is used with its own columbus system all the elements are graphically reduced so to include more detail into the larger screen, but when this screen is used with the bolero mib2 system I think this will not occur. Bolero will just fill the larger screen as it does with the 6,5 inch - it won't show more it will just show bigger. For example 6,5 inch bolero screen displays 5 fixed radio logos at a time, since the columbus displays six fixed radio logos - so shows more detail. And this is all over the interface. It will be great if with bolero mib2 happens the same and I'm asking if someone has any experience to share?

If I'm right this makes the 6,5 inch display of bolero/amundsen mib2 the sharpest/brightest and most detailed one in the line. My prediction is that some pixelization may occur on the columbus screen and make it look a bit under res, since it tries to display more details into the same resolution matrix where the pixels are actually larger compared to these on the 6,5" screen of bolero (it has the same resolution on smaller surface area).

Yes, it just upscales the screen, you don’t see extra info that the 6.5 inch doesn’t see, it just makes stuff bigger. I have Amundsen MIB2 (which is just a Bolero with nav) running the 8 inch screen and it’s the same as it was on the 6.5 inch screen, just bigger :)

The display is still perfectly clear, don’t worry :)

VEEEEERY NICE! So I'm in s hurry to do this slot and finally plug the display. I will share photos or even video when it is done.

Mission succes. I'm posting some mirror link magic - samsung s7 fully operational on my new flat TV in a car. I'll post some photos too in next post. Gee I'can even start remote desktop of my computer situated in the office and start outlook, see/reply mails etc. That is cool! The screen rocks.

Bluetooth is too slow. Wireless Area Network will be better with router or somethink. But cable is ok. You can't go anywhere in there, are you?

The plug on the columbus screen was successfully formed since the car is still on warranty and cabling is intact. Applying some photos.

well i have my unit back from Pawel and its working perfectly. The only issue is to get apps like youtube etc to work the phone needs to be rooted/jailbreak and i have a Samsung S8 which are notoriously difficult. I've bricked it a few times but when i get it working i'll report back.

the flat touch screen is beautiful though, well worth the money.

Nice one, glad you are happy with the install. It’s made such a difference to my car.

Happy new infotainment! There is no need to root. You simply need an android 7 which is done very easy with official samsung firmware and a samsung upload software. Then you need LG MirrorDrive version 1.2.1.2, EasyTouch for easy home and back buttons on the main screen and Nova Launcher to have landscape home screen of the phone, since it is needed to be landscape when connected to the car. By this configuration you get your full phone on the car's screen. I've published a video previously. You can start any app in your car - remote desktop, TV channel streaming apps, anything. LG Mirror Drive requires to be started a few times after the first approach to start an app, but after that it works solid as a rock. I even tried the augmented reality navigation of sygic projected on the car's display, but you need to put your phone on stand on the front glass since the camera is used to see the surroundings and the app augments the navigation route on the surroundings - it is so coool, better than a HUD.

it was actually a pleasure driving home today, i got AA mirror link to work after finally rooting the S8+, i have to say its amazing!! the screen makes such a difference, thanks sash and pawel for the help!

I have a spare rooted S5 so im going to try the wireless trick as my S8 is on a wireless car charger and AA defeats the whole purpose. Ill let you know how i get on.

my phone is up top as i was using waze on it but ill give the sygic a go as well. Thanks Motronix but i dont want to downgrade to Nougat so the phone has to be rooted, I was actually running the ported S9 rom on my bosses S8 today for a laugh, its very quick and alot smoother. with the S8 there are sooo many different ROMS literally hundreds. this is the difficulty and Samsung added some extra protection against rooting in the last update. but theres a fix

Android Auto working on the 8" touch screen! Im not happy with the icon setup just yet and i think it might be an S8+ issue, due to the massive scren and much higher resolution than the 8" screen, when you unplug from the headunit it leaves the phone with small offset icons which is not ideal and the phone nedds restarting. You also have to manually select AA mirror where in the youtubes ive seen it just starts straight in to mirror.

I only want it for netflix etc so ill use the S5 instead.

ive rooted an S5 (took 30 secs) and im using it as a wireless client for the Android auto. the S5 is a much better ratio screen for the headunit, the icons dont get so spaced out.

The display looks great. Do you find sensor buttons to be better for interaction? Bottom AA button line eats quite a space but otherwise it is nice that you can seamlessly switch between the android auto functions and the screen of your phone - it is worth trying. Can you give some more details on what release of AA mirror you used and why is it required to root the phone. Is it because the newer versions of google services forbid the AA mirror? And when you use AA mirror do you get actual screen of your phone 1:1 or it is some kind of summary list of extracted phone apps and some might not run properly under aa mirror. Any other impressions and remarks on AA mirror usage will be greatly appreciated. And for your safety don't watch netflix too much :) while on the road.

yes its a much nicer experience, the AA line is the same on all AA instances unfortunately. it works a lot better than car play but it doesnt look anywhere near as nice.

im just using the latest release, works pretty seamlessly once you have it set up. The app itself needs root, google services doesnt feature. yes you get the actual screen but you also get a hideaway screen that shows all the installed apps on one large scroller. Neflix doesnt work anymore on a rooted device, there are some people have got a work around but i havent had a chance to look at it yet

Hello

I see someone installing Alpine in this thread, is this done and any reviews/suggestions especially sound quality and sound processor options with stock speakers

Thanks
