Upcoming facelift/ new model ?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy a 280 Estate BUT, I'm worried there is a new model or major facelift coming up.

Does anyone out there have a crystal ball ?

Chris

I've got two.

Get one ordered quick before they make the headlights into multiple separate units or something equally daft ;-)

I have read there is a facelift coming soon - more power and bigger infotainment screen

Anyone know when ?.

There’s always a face lift, added options, added standard spec around the corner. Don’t think about it too much or you’ll always put off ordering one.

Skoda at least try and stick with a 3 year facelift, 5-6 year new model format. Whereas some manufacturers are updating on an almost annual basis.

Theres a new front end and some slight design changes coming in 2019 e,g mid-life facelift.  It may be worth seeing if the newer WLTP friendly engines/gearboxes are improvements over the current range.

Oh and the 280 is meant to be 272ps due to the WLTP and should also have a 7 spd DSG.  Of all the models in the range I think that’s the engine/gearbox that could make a very good car, even better.

Plus dont forget it will also have a diesel dpf equivalent - GPF gasoline particle filter....

The facelift isn't coming until MY20, which should start production in W32 of 2019.

I wouldn't wait on it, to be honest...

Facelifts are always risky given that people have different preferences, but the majority seem to be happy with the current design (except the Xenon headlights, which are a bit outdated).

And with Skoda finally fixing the biggest complaint that people have with the interior of the Superb, which is the dash (those horrible analogue dials, and that tiny display in the middle), and replacing it with a great Digital Dashboard, I think the MY19 Superb is a safe bet in terms of its resell value in a few years. And that includes even after the facelifted MY20 comes out, unless they make it like AMAZINGLY much better, which is.. you know.. unlikely...

So yeah... MY19 with a Digital Dashboard  and Columbus, and your car will look modern and up-to-date for quite some time. The 272 engine won't hurt either ;)

From end of August You can order skoda superb (at least in Lithuania) with some small improvements: superb 280 (now it is 272) comes with 7 gears  and has option for digital dashboard. Headlights is still bi-xenons, no LED option.

So, what I'm reading is - other than 7 speed DSG, the possibility of LEDs, a new nose and GPF, I'd be better off with the current model that has more power, no GPF but, only 6 gears (not that I can see that matters) ??

I might start trying for a deal in the new year - see if there are any run out models on the horizon

Anything First Registered after the 31st August just past is going to be WLTP Approved and have a GPF,

unless a model built before the 1st June 2018 and First Registered under Derogation Rules.

Pretty much.  From what I can gather, the switch on the Golf R from 6 > 7 spd only meant the car was doing a few hundred revs less at motorway speeds which would be a benefit in the Golf as the exhaust is much more intrusive. It’s hushed in the Superb at under 4K revs.

Some Golf owners swear the 7 spd is smoother others couldn’t tell the difference over the 6 spd.

I doubt there will be LED’s in the facelift Superb and LED doesn’t necessarily mean more/better light. The matrix LED’s in an A6 are amazing but the LED’s in a SEAT Leon are possibly worse than the bi-xenon in the Superb, especially in the rain.

Looking at the prices of nearly new/less than 1 year 280’s they must be one of the best ‘bargains’ on the market. The level of kit/quality/performance available isn’t to be sniffed at. (Even a factory order is relative good value IMO)

I think finding an unregistered 280 in the dealer network would be a good buy if the spec/colour is right. Or even an almost new/demo one.  I certainly wouldn’t feel short changed over the facelift as there’s just not enough in the pipeline to justify the extra wait time and price hike.

A Unregistered 280 would have to have been built before June 2018 and tested under the old EU tests and have been applied under the Derogation Rules to be First Registered after August 31st 2018.

The Derogation rule is allowing 20% of the vehicles First Registered in 2017 to be Registered without the WLTP.

Are there 280's built before June that are Unregistered?

Its 10%

Eligible vehicles: Manufactured before 01/06/2018
and subject to a maximum limit of vehicles for which
derogations can be granted will be the greater of: a)
10% of the manufacturers sales in 2017 (evidence of
sales must be submitted with this application) , or b)
2000 vehicles in total of the categories above.

Yes sorry typo.

That's not many vehicles then if it was 280's First Registered in the UK.   We will see soon if the VW Group have made many Derogation Applications for the UK.

Surely if Right Hand Drive 280's were available for the UK before June they were sold or got Pre-reged.

Does this mean you wont be able to do just short town routes like with diesel?

Can this 7 speed dsg handle more torque?

Not sure as no one knows how well it will work etc.  But i dont think it willbe as problematic as a diesel, petrols dont take as long to warm up.  But who knows!

I believe it works completely differently to a DPF. As a petrol engine runs so much hotter, any particles are burnt off when you lift off the accelerator pedal. So a "re-gen" happens frequently every journey

New tech, unproven.   Could be a lot of issues, could be great but based on the fact VAG and every other manufacturer are shoehorning a lot of R&D plus testing into a period that they have no control over then corners may be cut and quality *may* be lacking.

The EA888 in it's current implementation, with the DSG 6 spd has been in a multiple VAG cars for a good few years now and whilst there's been some recalls they have been mainly regarding the S3's.    Apart from the chrome trim issues and some haldex issues I've seen very few major issues reported on here by 280 owners.  Same for the 220 too, I suppose.  Disregarding reliability for a moment, the current engine is an absolute gem.

Would I buy another 280, yes I wouldn't think twice.  Would I buy a 272, well maybe but I'd probably hold off and see what the new engine/gearbox is like and then see how the 'GPF' works in the real world and if there's any issues picked up early on.  At the moment there's too many unknowns and not enough factual information being released by dealers/manufacturers.  I guess that's because manufacturers are still on the back foot.

Great information guys.

Here's another conundrum - I intend to keep the car for 10+ years  -   280P 4x4 or 190D 4x4, both DSG ?

The 280 I think will keep me interested but the 190D will keep costs down

Depends whether u want economy of fun lol. I have the 220 couldnt quite afford the 280, would love to have.

I only do about 8000 miles a year, so I don't think the D is worth the hassle, that's why my heart is set on a 280.

As mine is ‘loosening up’ the engine feels less resistant to rev but also is becoming more ‘economical’ too. I’ve seen 42 mpg on a long run and long term average has gone from 30 > 32.5 mpg.  Some people barley see high 40’s-50 mpg from a 190 TDI 4x4.

Depends what you want? Having driven nothing but diesels for the last 11 years, and as good as the latest VAG ones are, I wouldn’t go back to diesel now unless I was doing well over 20k miles a year.  The TSI’s are just so nice and the smiles per gallon makes up for the miles per gallon. (Oh and no agricultural clatter is another bonus!)

Yeah go for the 280 if do low miles. Ive had diesels for years now as well and like penguin gone to petrol albeit 220 and i wont go back to diesel either. Its just soooo much more refined and quieter.  But has the power when u need it. I hope mine loosens up and i see a better fuel economy as its lower than i expect even on longer runs.  Its not even done 3k miles yet lol
