Inner CV grease. Botched by garage?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Couple of questions and your options are appreciated.

Anyone know what grease is used in the inner CV joint?

A search revealed it is different to the outer CV joint that uses molybdenum disulphide. https://www.saabcentral.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-104989.html

This suggests an amber grease is needed fir inner CV joint.

I ask this because I discovered the inner CV joint bolts had not been tightened up by garage or at least 2 were obviously thread showing. A black grease had been thrown out onto oil tray, arb and back of engine block, catalyst etc.

See photos.

The Fabia vrs had been in for a new concentric clutch cylinder which was leaking. As the labor costs were high I asked for a new clutch and flywheel kit also.

Should I expect the garage to repack the inner CV joint with new grease before reassembly?

The bill came to just under £650 half was labor.

I had already pulled this normally good garage up about damaging accordion pipe from airbox to turbo intake, leaving it indented and not secured to maf sensor airbox.

PS whilst uploading photos the grease looks dark green.

That grease can't be from inside the CV joint, the boot is still sealed and does not rely on the flange being tight to be sealed, only the clip.

I've never heard of using two different types of grease on identical CV joints simply due to fitted position. CV grease is CV grease, it's all the same.

I wonder if the mechanic packed some extra grease into the drive flange before refitting the driveshaft and when he forgot to finish tightening the bolts some of that grease centrifuged out of the flange.

It doesn't matter anyway, just tighten the bolts to the correct torque and you're good to go.
