Fabia Vrs - How does one blow a Turbo?

A small bit of history before I pose my question.

I've had my Skoda Vrs for 14000 miles (just over a year), it's already had it's first service (recently where the garage replaced the oil and charged me a wopping

If your sure that you're correct then leave it. A lot of dealers, try and get as many cars in the garage as possible as the service is usually £90 an hour exc VAT. Be interesting to see what the price would of been after a week....

If the turbo was broken beforehand you would have known - mine shut down due to a pipe coming off (clip more accurately) and it was hardly driveable and smoked like a good un.

I would be suspicious and demand a free replacement. 14k is kinda nutz for a turbo to fail IMHO.

Maybe you should be quizzing the garage as to how they blew up your turbo?! Only way I could think of to do it easily would be to run it with low oil, or hold max boost for a length of time, neither of which should have happened "reversing out of the garage"....

Have you seen the car since it's been in their care? Only reason I ask is that they may be covering up a prang they've had in it or some damage they've done (which they're rectifying) and a blown turbo may sound like a plausible excuse that isn't going to make you ask them lots of questions.....?

My sentiments exactly. I'd want them to show me what was wrong, point out the turbo etc. At the end of the day it is your car, I'd want to know the truth!

I have seen the car since the repair, body and everything looks fine. Although thinking back now, they did hurry the customer satisfaction form in front of me to sign.. I am going to phone them now. I smell a rat.

I am just wondering if the gear leaver cable/clutch could have anything to do with the turbo? Would they be messing around with the oil or turbo to fix the clutch or wire cable in the gear leaver?

Is anyone aware of this wire/cable recall on the Skoda Vrs? This is what Skoda told me 3 months ago when the problem was discovered?

They have told me the replacement of the turbo will be covered under the three year warranty. Should I ask them for any sort of garage warranty for they work they are doing? Would that be the right thing to do, or should I just trust them that they will be using correct parts etc in my car...

I don't think it was a recall as such (not a safety item) but a lot of '04 vRSes - including mine - had a gear lever that rattled in neutral. A revised cable linkage was fitted to quieten it down.

Fitting the new cable won't have interfered with the turbo, although the air intake pipe may have been removed to improve access to the gear linkage.

The gear rattle's genuine - mine's had the fix but it only took about an hour and there's no reason for them to open the bonnet even (assuming like other cars' gear linkages).

I smell a rat...

Mines going in for the gear cables next week - rattles like mad under acceleration. Maybe speak to the service manager, and mention the fact you've discussed the problem on here and am not satisfied with their explanation and why - i.e. its not plausable!

Let us know how you get on. Have to say i'm a bit biased after my old seat dealer lied to me over parts that needed replacing - i got them checked by 2 other garages who contradicted them - got a formal, written apology; but not good enough.....

or maybe there actually is a problem and you thankfully have had a good mechanic work on the car and spot a problem that hasn't reared its head yet and would cause a lot of damage so they are sorting it out now within a week rather than having am engine blow up on them. ask LeeBoy what damage oil starvation does to an engine :thumbdwn:

A good explanation as to why it's happened would make sense though, assuming the dealer/mechanic has done a good job & spotted it, I'd want to know why it's happened/how they'll prevent it from happening again :)

Sounds doubtful to me. I wouldn't trust the explanation you've been given. did you check the miles and record them before it going in? check to see if its been ragged. Again, i know of this happening to a fellow leon driver, who finally got a formal apology after it turned out one of the muppets in the workshop had given it a 20 minute blast around the local duel carridgeways. it only went in for a service, and didn't require test driving.

Sorry - experience has left me bitter and untrusting :weeping: ....

Well, I am suspecious because the car recently had it's first service where I understand they had to replace the OIL, so how can the car be leaking oil, which it isn't because this is no evidence of an oil leak on my road, nor is there oil on the road where I park during the day, nor is there oil on the road where there car is currently parked (outside Skoda), and if there was an oil problem, "a massive oil leak" as they told me, surely I would have seen the oil light appear on the dash and have noticed the lack of power in the car.

I visited the car last night and using my spare key started the car without any problems, no oil lights came on, it was reving ok, etc... I didn't drive it, incase there was something wrong with it, but all seemed fine. I had a look under the car as well, and again "no oil leaking, nothing in fact" and bare in mind the car has been parked there in the same place for three days.... :mad:

I didn't take a reading of the speedo the day I brought it in to have a mirror replaced as I didn't think it would be driven. I know I should have, but I did last night... However I could tell if the car has been driven because I record mileage and I only use my car for work travel... I need to do some sums.

I am letting it be for now, because honestly there is nothing that can be said now that will make me have my Vrs any sooner, and would prefer not to antagonise them with questions etc... Credit to Skoda, they gave me a brand new Courtsey Car (Octavia 2l TDI Estate), and it goes like a rocket and is very comfortable. They have comfirmed I can keep the car until mine is ready. So I really have no grumbles there.

Mike, why not give them a ring and ask for a status update? You can then decide whether they're genuine or not, based on what you know the state of the car is....

I'd be pretty pee'd off if there was nothing wrong with a car I'd paid for and it was just parked outside a dealership for a week! Hopefully they're not using it until their new Fabia vRS demo car arrives! :rofl:

my sierra has been sat on the same spot for months yet there is oil all over the block/gearbox/arb etc etc, how could this possibly happen and not get a single drop of oil on the floor?? to them a major oil leak might not mean the oil is squirting out like a water pistol but that it is quick enough to do damage before you realise.

ross wouldn't change my turbo last saturday because i had been given the wrong washers for my oil line, no i'm pretty confident that if we had used the old washers and started it up we wouldn't have seen jets of oil going all over the place but i wouldn't drive it back 50miles knowing it was leaking.

keep a record of phone calls, and who you speak to. something fishy is going on IMO.

Unless you can establish exactly what is wrong and what parts will be replaced then I think it is unfair to criticise. As for turning up last night and starting the car with your spare key, well I'm afraid that is sheer stupidity, you have no idea what state the engine is/was in, had they started the job and moved on until the parts arrive?? You wouldn't know.

Instead of bleating on about mistrust on here get on the phone and get some answers. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but they may actually be doing you a good service here.

The car is fitted with an under tray which is capable of holding a reasonable amount of oil, perhaps this is what they have seen.

Well, whats done is done. I agree that Mike needs to be getting onto the dealers in person. My distrust of VAG dealerships spans VW, Seat and Skoda, and ten years of ownership - i think i could argue well that a trustworthy dealership is a valuable find, and that there are undeniably some very dishonest ones out there.

I hope I’m utterly wrong, but the whole situation seems strange and smacks of 'lets milk the warranty' or something. Let us know how you get on Mike.
