Steering wheel wobble under acceleration

Featured Replies

Hi, my steering wheel wobbles excessively at higher speeds but it (appears) only happens under acceleration. I can get to 70mph and when i remove my foot it reduces.

any ideas? Thank you

Have you checked your tyres? Pressures and wear. Thats easiest thing u can check.

First check tyres for problems, abnormal wear, sidewall bulges , check inner side too. Have tyres ever been repaired? Could be coming apart internally. Swap back for rear, any difference?

Get the tyres checked for balance.

Then its down to working through the suspension/transmission chain, check for worn components, favourites would be track rod ends and worn drive shaft splines.

Have had them checked but I have just seen a thread by MartyMcG who shares the same issues and he found it was due to a warped Tyre. Going to get this checked tomorrow

Thank you going to do the tyres and rotate them tomorrow to see what happens. I will have the wheels and tyres checked for damage

Check the balancing too, as xman mentioned. Balancing weights can come off, my previous car had symptoms as you describe and a lost weight put things off. Re-balance sorted it.

How long do you have this problem?

To be honest I am not sure, Probably a few months now I have just lived with it. I was thinking back what has changed I know I have hit some serious pot holes recently and maybe that has contributed.

The alloy wheels are known to be susceptible to such damage, and you'll need to have them straightened by a wheel specialist ... the tyres themselves rarely get deformed by such impacts (unless they were under-inflated for a long time)

It takes a lot to bend an alloy, far more than steel. If they are bent I think it's unlikely you can repair them.

Sorry, but you're very wrong ... there are alloys and there are alloys, not all are the same quality ... you'd be surprised what kind of damage to the alloy wheels (them being warped or chipped, even cracked) can be repaired today ... a few years ago, I've bought a used 19" alloy set for my C5 Tourer (Adriatique model, if anyone knows them, very nice looking on the car) ... I've had them sent to the rim specialist to check if they need to be straightened out ... which they did ... I've then went to the tyre garage to put my new tyres on, and the wheels didn't have one weight glued on them, they were perfect ... some 6 months later, when the regular change from summer to winter tyres came (I have 2 sets of tyres, one set of alloys), the winter tyres were new, and the alloys had to have a few of the weights on each wheel (no major potholes hit, probably the climbing and coming down from kerbs etc. caused that) ... earlier this year, I've hit a major pothole with my Superb, and the tyre gave up immediately (the sidewall broke), had to stop within 200 meters and put a spare tyre to drive home ... out of precaution, I've sent the alloy wheel to the rim specialist, and once again, it was fixed ... new tyre fitted, no weights on it required ...

Regarding the alloy - steel wheels, it is true that steel wheels are more easily bent (that's why they're much cheaper).

A few video examples of the alloy wheels repairs (didn't find a video that makes the alloys perfect, that comes down to the craft secrets), but you can get a pretty god idea what is possible:

Well an update.Had wheels balanced today and the front moved to the back and vice versa. Well the wobble has gone! Great news HOWEVER I now have a serious rumble from the front which I suspect is from sawtooth from the rear tyres now up front. Am i right to assume this? I have never had this before and although I cannnot see or feel significant saw toothing there is signs of it.

Is saw toothing common?

From what I hear, yes - fairly common.

Seems to be most common on Superb Combi's which have been carrying a lot of weight in the back and/or have had incorrect tyre pressures. If you so a search of the forum you will get a fair few hits on "sawtooth".
