Another door lock question...

Featured Replies

The Car is a 1.4 estate Fabia.

Central locking is currently configured as follows, (I think like this from new):

One remote fob lock press for all doors locked

One remote fob unlock press for driver door only

Two remote fob unlock press for all doors and tailgate unlocked

Press and hold tailgate button for tailgate only

Does not have the auto lock enabled (doors locking when driving)

However

The nearside rear passenger door only, unlocks unexpectedly in some the following examples

Car is locked

Push and hold tailgate fob button, releases boot door but also unlocks rear NS passenger door. Closing the tailgate door relocks the tailgate and does re-lock the passenger door again.  Except, if you open that passenger door then it remains unlocked after tailgate is closed and the alarm is not active.

Double press of the fob lock button locks the car doors, activates the alarm but unlocks the rear NS passenger door. So this means all doors are locked, except this rear one. If you open the door the alarm goes off.

Other observations noted.

If I use the lock and unlock buttons on the drives door panel. The lock button locks all locks, but not the rear passenger door. This is able to be opened from outside, despite the driver thinking it’s all locked.

In fact, when I use the door lock button on the driver door panel I can hear the car locks close, and then that rear passenger door unlocks straight away.

Whenever there is any locking happening from the single press of the fob lock button, the sound of the door lock motors are all in sync, one clean lock sound. Except this rear passenger door which has a half second delay. Same delay noted when double unlocking. All doors and tailgate unlock but there is this delay on the rear passenger door.

Is there enough description for someone to help me on where to start looking first to fault find?  I don’t know how the central locking ‘talks’ to the door locks but I have a Haynes book on the way, will get the VCDS lite software and a usb reader. Anything else.

FWIW, I've changed the door opening function to one press to open, one press to close all doors. The rear NS door still can be unlocked in situations where you expect the doors to be locked.

Is there any knowledge as to changing the locking mech and whether its likely to be that thats at fault or something else?

What year is the car?

(Wondering if you'll have bolted or rivetted carrier panels)

Only thing it can be other than the lock itself is the wiring, I guess; have you looked in the door bellows for frayed wires?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't done any inspection on the bellows, but will look. for obvious issues.

Its a 55 plate, 2006 Fabia 1 Estate.

That'll have rivets holding the carrier panel on then. Makes lock access more of a pain, unfortunately.

Fingers crossed you find a dodgy wire.

Thanks again. Yes its got the rivets but I have some in stock, should I feel adventurous and drill them out and take a look inside.

As is typical with a new-to-me used car, it turns out that both the rear doors  are leaking into the car. Removal the door trim card reveals that the seal/gasket at the bottom of the riveted carrier panels are wet through. Yesterday's rain helped me notice that.

Generous amount of silicon sealant applied to the carrier panel should fix that, hopefully?

Now I'm wondering whether the locking components could have been damaged by rain water not exiting the door properly? Also wondering whether to live with the door lock problem, as it is, and just pay attention to locking the car correctly. And just seal these newly discovered leaks and pretend its all gravy.

Yeah, silicone will do the job. That's what I used on mine. It can be a pain to remove if you ever need to though.

I doubt very much that water will have got high enough to get into the lock unit. Worth checking the drain holes in the bottom of the door. However, they are almost never completely blocked in my experience.
