Steering Wheel Wear

Featured Replies

There have been a few complaints around premature wear of the leather steering wheel on a few Kodiaq's.

All have been replaced under warranty, Skoda acknowledging they had a bad batch.

Might be worth keeping an eye on yours...

Excellent, mine has worn badly at the '10 past the hour' wheel position. The matt effect has worn away to reveal shiny, darker leather beneath. My car is in for chrome window trim replacements - under warranty - soon. I'll be sure to highlight the premature wheel wear. Thanks for the heads up.

Quick update on my situation - my wheel was replaced under warranty with no questions asked whatsoever.  The new chrome trims look splendid too.  Happy punter me.....

Good to hear!

How old is your Kodiaq? Just curious to see if others comment, whether we can pinpoint the batch to a certain build date period.

Good idea, mine is a 17 plate.  I'll check build month and report back.

Mine is a 67 plate landed in the UK February last year. Had a new steering wheel fitted in June.

Mine is a May 17 vehicle.

How did you check build month?

Has anyone else had there steering wheel replaced under warranty due to the wear are on it.

I have..... mine showed lots of wear. The dealer didn't question the claim at all. At £385 for a new one I was dead chuffed.

Who is your dealership as mine are saying mine isn't covered under warranty

White Dove, Cardiff. Good luck.

Skoda issued a TPI for this manufacturing defect.

It only covered a certain production run though.

The complaints so far where owners have shared photos show a consistent pattern to the wear, a similar look, feel and location.

If your dealer is rejecting the claim then there must be a reason for it, have you mentioned to them the TPI?

If they know of the TPI and are still knocking back your claim you need to ask them on what grounds.

Take some photos and post them for us to see.

Try to use existing threads if possible, this helps people in the future if they also experience similar issues...

My car is a 17 plate I phoned Skoda UK and said to check the tpi and they said there was nothing on there for any of them

Take the contents of this thread, plus those over on the Kodiaq UK Facebook group and ask Skoda UK again if there is an issue.

Skoda UK's default answer for as long as I can remember has been "we've not had any other reports of this issue sir". They even pedalled this drivel on a separate issue when several Briskoda members had open cases with Skoda UK's customer service team.

Not had this on my Kodiaq, but exactly the same on my Mitsubishi PHEV, the wheel was changed under warranty - no quibble. So it’s not just a Skoda thing.

I thought it may have been caused by something that was on my hands or cleaning products, but it seems that sometimes the leather just isn’t up to it. Leather gearshifts also seem to suffer in the Octavia.

Hope you get it changed, very premature wear.

Hi guys this is my steering wheel and Derek slacks on the a66 refuse to change it under warranty. He said if he gives me the new steering wheel and then send the one off my car to the warranty team they will send it back saying it's wear and not warranty leaving him the bill for the steering wheel he would of gave me.

On the other hand getting the chrome around the window changed under warranty for the mottling effect or something like that he called it

That is a clear warranty claim.

Derek slack's response, whilst accurate is a weak excuse. They first need to get approval from Skoda UK. Skoda UK almost always side with the dealer, so this is a classic case of Derek Slack not trying hard enough on your behalf.

Time to involve Skoda UK customer services. I know you've spoken to them already but you need to make clear to them that others are getting this clear manufacturing defect / substandard quality resolved under warranty.

They'll probably recommend you try a different dealer. Get yourself down to Des Winks in Scarborough for a day out, I doubt they'll mess you about.

Silver have Des Winks changed one already? Thanks also I will be on to Skoda UK as soon as I get to work

I couldn't tell you, all I know is they prioritise customer service higher than any other Skoda retailer I've used.

Good luck with Skoda UK!
