Broken key

Featured Replies

Both of the flip keys for my Fabia have failed in exactly the same spot, meaning I've had to superglue them back together.  They must be made of cheese because the minor repeated stress of flipping the key open causes a crack on the shoulder where it meets the fob and when this breaks away, the key blade falls out.

Is it possible to buy just a new blade & pivot to fit back into the fob?

I'm not keen on paying dealer price of £140.89 for each new key.

Timpsons on most high streets will fit you a new key. Google them for what they do and the nearest. This was on the Kia forum recently and Timpsons repaired one with a new case and key for £35.00.

New key blades are around a tenner plus cutting. Just need to split fob apart to replace key blade

I don't think a new blade is required.  I had to get a spare for my Octavia a good few years ago and IIRC the blade is screwed onto the pivoting/sprung part of the fob by a very small screw.

I *think* all that's required is the front part of the fob which has the metal 'elbow'.

^^ e.g you just need the part on the right.

So buy this:

Take your existing key fob apart and retain the blade and back part with the buttons/battery/gubbins/coding then screw the blade onto the front part of the replacement key and then fit the rear part from your original fob.

Yeah you are right it does just screw in from memory

Even maybe just an incredibly small spiral pin?

I have found that on many makes of car's that a folding key blade type key will not last long.

On both of my cars I don't fold the key blade in and flick it out regularly.

Also having little weight on the key ring and putting the key in ignition the right way round helps with it's life.

I keep my cars a long time so I want it to last.

It is one of those good ideas in theory but not in practice.

Thanks AG Falco

Ive had my last flip key for 8yrs and key still looks new.  I dont have anu keyrings on it though which as mentioned helps as when its in ignition all weight is on the hinge part

Thanks for all the replies.  I've found this place near me which can do a replacement blade for £12.50 so I'll give them a try during the week.

I recon you have aftermarket keys! I have changed a few fobs but never had an issue with genuine blades. I slip my proper one back in and its fine. As long as that's a cut key price, thats ok otherwise the budget fob and get that cut, will look nicer.

The keys are Skoda originals.

WOW! I am surprised! Sorry to hear that, then. It looks like your set were made by a French car builder, on a friday afternoon and on his birthday!!

Happened to my key about two year ago and lost the blade! Been using the spare and now that has cracked so timpsons cut me a new blade and I’ve super glued it to the old fob. Works good
