Pothole at 60mph V Gigaro wheel - Only one winner :-(

Featured Replies

Mrs T was driving home, hit a pothole and this was the result. Car was travelling at about 60mph and the pothole was close to the centre line of the road, probably about 7cm deep. That is one seriously ****ed wheel! Lincolnshire roads are extremely bad and littered with potholes so dodging them is an everyday occurrence. Unfortunately she just didn't see this one coming!

C'est la vie!

Wow, that's some serious damage to cause that!

You need to find out if the authorities in charge of the road were aware of the hole. If they were, they may be liable for the ensuing damage the hole causes. If not, they need to be informed and then, they will be from then on in!

Yes they were. The site was listed on their website, looks like it had been repaired before and lo and behold it was filled in today!

Good news - looks like the tyre is OK!

Bad news - a new wheel from Skoda is £240!

If there's that much damage to the wheel. I would be very doubtful that the tyre is reusable, needs inspecting carefully on the inside.

I'd expect that there will be some associated suspension damage as well, if it was the front, the chances of damage will be greater as the load of the drive train is on these wheels.

I'm not sure if Fabia MK2 got the new "older" design of TCA rear vertical bush to replace the previous voided horizontal bush, but if it has, I'd think that that bush will now be torn.

My wife's August 2015 VW Polo 6C ended up with a split TCA rear vertical mounting bush after maybe one too many smaller pothole "experiences" - certainly nothing like what happened to your wife's car, that surprised me as that new "older" design of mounting has been used by VW Group for many years in other cars including Golfs.

Edit:- I thought that I had read that local authorities have stopped paying out for that sort of damage - because it is costing too much and removing money from their roads budget!??!

I went to collect the wheel today. Because I'm a tight git and a cheeky ****** I asked for a discount and they gave it to me for £167! Made me a lot happier!!! :-)

And Mrs T has demanded a new tyre so that has been ordered as well.

Potholes and the council - biggest joke going, recently fractured my L5 vertebra and sternum due to one, hit it blue the tyre out and sent me flying as I was going round a chicane, low and behold, two ditches later the courtesy car had to be put to rest, 18 plate ford fiesta ST-line with 500 miles on the clock. It's been 4 months since the incident and the pot holes are still there!

Having bought a new wheel and 2 new tyres I took the car into the garage today to have them fitted and 4-wheel alignment carried out. Everything was going well until the technician came out to see me and said "I think you need another new wheel". Yes, the rear was ****ed as well. I don't know why I hadn't thought of checking the rear but as it was still holding air it simply didn't occur to me. He took me through to the workshop and underneath the car and as soon as I looked at it you could see it was not round. The wheel had aligned fine (the damage to both wheels is on the inner lip) but had noticed a vibration on the test drive.

So, another new wheel has been ordered and the bill so far is now in excess of £600!

Oh Buggar!

It is good for business, I thought that was what UK PLC was all about nowadays, no one cares who's pocket the "solution" comes out of, it is seen as win win ???

Glad to say that Mrs T's Fabia is now back on the road. Time to tackle the council about getting the costs refunded ...
