Water in Spare Wheel well

Featured Replies

Hi all, I noticed about 6 months ago when clearing my boot that there was some water where the spare wheel sits.  There would to the wooden part of the boot cover.  I dried it all out and cleaned it.  No issues.  For the past week or so I have noticed an odd smell inn the car, bit like rotten veg.  I checked the car for any dead animals or rotting food.  Nothing. I checked the spare wheel well and found water again (or some other liquid).  It wasn't full there where puddles of stagnant water.  Not sure how long it's been there as there was no evidence of mould.  But this where the smell came from.  My question is, how is water getting in??

I can see no obvious holes or loose parts that would allow water to get in.

Any ideas??

Interesting place to find stagnant water! I have a few guesses:

  1. leaks/rodent in spare tire or getting access to vehicle's insides.
  2. something leaching through the boot carpet

is this an estate? there are documented issues with the rear washer that goes through the wiper arm leaking and dripping into the wheel well. Usually though the rear wiper fails first!

Second thought; do you have a sunroof, there are also known issues with the drainage on these roofs.

Third idea, I'm getting tired now, do you park on a slope so that rain or washing can accumulate and get past / overwhelm the tailgate seals.

if there is a leak  outside to inside the carpet will be wet/damp, if it is coming in through the underside then the carpet will be bone dry.

The smell will be water and rubber and will be nasty.......

Good luck

Is yours twin-door or estate?

When I bought my twin-door (also 2014 & 1.4) the righthand grommit/flexible cable tube between the hatch and the roof (one each side) wasn't fully secure when I was looking at the car before buying it - asked the dealer to sort as it could be a potential leak, but it wasn't just a push in job. There was no sign of water then but the car was only a year old - it's been fine since.

On other cars where I've had leak issues where they have been hard to trace (none Skoda thus far) I've sometimes resorted to stripping out some trim and carpets etc and then dusting surfaces with talc to show up water flows.

Hi guys its a Saloon, no rear washer, no sunroof.  It is parked on my drive which is slightly slanted however the carpets are bone dry.  The water builds up in the well.  I have checked for holes etc and can see nothing obvious.
