Subtle yet noticeable vibration throughout the whole car

Featured Replies

Octavia 2000. 1.9 TDI 90hp AGR, ~330kkm on the clock.

Symptoms:

- when accelerating there is a subtle yet noticeable vibration throughout the whole car at all speeds, but more noticable over 80km/h

- in first gear if holding hand on gear knob it can be felt as low frequency vibration

- as gears go up, frequency increases

- over 120km/h even the steering wheel shakes

- taking a turn more spiritedly at higher speeds almost eliminates the vibration (as if whatever is vibrating is now pressed down)

- changed out the DMF, both driveshafts, gearbox mount, all 4 tyres - with changing gearbox mount there was a noticeable reduction in vibration, meaning now the car doesn't vibrate when cruising, now it vibrates only under load

- sometimes the vibration is felt even under harder braking, but only at speeds above 100km/h

- before changing out the driveshafts and gearbox mount, the car was shaking as if it's gonna fall apart (bought it that way)

- this has been going on now for about 6 months now, in the meantime the car developed an intermittent clonk or two from the suspension - still the car goes straight and very supple and quiet over bumps

My thoughts: other two engine mounts, gearbox itself, suspension bushings (although the wishbone bushings are new)...

I've been to a few mechanics, they can't figure it out, the suspension seems fine, engine mounts in place, they just say "come back when it's worse". Please help as this is driving me crazy, at least to point me in the right direction.

How are the brake discs, age wise and wear wise.

Have you swapped wheels front to rear? It may just be that simple.. a badly balanced wheel rim.. swapping them will change the characteristic of the vibration.

Other engine mounts is a worthwhile swap and see, esp as you say its worst "under load".

I swapped all engine mounts for new ones, now vibrates slightly only 80~120. The braking vibration was dust in rear drum brakes, that was cleaned and is now sorted.

I've pinpointed the problem to the right (longer) driveshaft. I've actually swapped worn ones with "good" used ones. But I was lucky with the left one, but the right one is actually "less worse".

I would go into new driveshaft if I knew 100% it would solve the issue, is it possible something is vibrating in the gearbox ?

Hmm sounds a bit like my story. Have changed two sets of complete brakes in less than 15k km. Vibrations kept coming back after about 3-4k km. At the end had to replace front hub + new bearing (both sides) to get rid of vibration at higher speeds. Had them measured (with dial gauge) before ordering new set, actually had only been warped slightly (few micros..). And of course a new set of front brakes...

After that no more vibrations (about 25k km now..) Have to mention i do like to keep my suspenion tidy, everything aligned properly.

Is there someone who can actually diagnose this? As I've said, the vibrations are sometimes constant, maybe my hubs are also out of true. Wouldn't like to change the driveshaft for 200€ just to find the vibration is still there 😞
