2004 Fabia Clutch issue

Featured Replies

I would appreciate some advice regarding the clutch on my son's car.

It has been slipping for a while but the bite point has now dropped to the floor, there is only about an inch of movement in the pedal.

I have bought him one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLUTCH-KIT-FIT-SEAT-CORDOBA-IBIZA-IV-SKODA-FABIA-ROOMSTER-VW-FOX-POLO-1-2-12V/182558506340, thinking that as he is learning to be a mechanic he should be able to change the clutch himself.  Is that feasible on a driveway and does that appear to be the correct part for the fault as described?

You need to buy him all the lifting tackle, axle stands, engine support, etc required, all the tools including maybe specialised VAG tools, torque wrench etc and access to a workshop manual. If you need to remove driveshafts you need breaker bars or impact wrenches and will need new bolts and wheel bearing nut which in turn requires a special thin wall socket.

Your diagnosis may be wrong or incomplete as I would have thought bite point would be higher if the clutch was worn.

Doing it on a driveway, though possible would be a pig and enough to to put any youngster off being a mechanic. Especially at this time of the year.

You really need the car on a ramp for a job like that and workshop gear. Doing it on your driveway is a dangerous even for experienced mechanics and you may regret it. It will require 2 people at certain points to hold/remove/position the gearbox.

Very good write up by Wino.

Do read it, I don't think Wino is keen to try again and he's looks fairly adept as a mechanic.

I'll tell you what, if the Polo's clutch needs doing anytime soon, it ain't gonna be me doing it. :notme:

Enough time has probably passed. :D

Looks like a novice mechanic shouldn't be attempting it on the driveway, so the car may get scrapped instead as it isn't really worth the cost of paying a garage to do it
