HELP strange vibrating noise

Featured Replies

Hi, not sure how to explain this noise but I'll do my best.

Engine start-up from cold is fine, but once it's been idling for a few minutes there's this strange vibrating noise. I can only describe it as the sound plastic makes at high vibrating frequencies.

As a side note I've replaced the fan belt and no difference.

You can hear it excessively in the cabin at idle but as soon as you touch the throttle is goes then returns on idle. I've had a look under the car to check for loose trim etc but found nothing. Only thing I've noticed is the sound is very noticeable directly beneath the fuel tank. I've read several posts online and YouTube videos with similar noise but again they remain unsolved.

Are these cars renowned for noisey fuel pumps (in tank)? It's on 75k now and is a 2012 model. If anyone has had a similar problem before like this please share what you did to resolve the issue or if it is just one of those unidentifiable noises that never gets resolved.

Thanks in advance

Check the exhaust heat shield has not dropped at one of the supports and touching/hitting the exhaust. They can check this at any exhaust centre

No, it's outside the car for sure.

I've had the top glovebox out many times, makes to difference so I can rule that out.

I will have a look, tbh the exhaust is in need of a change soon anyhow so that will be a good opportunity to check.

Note that the rear silencer box is double skinned and although the outer skin always ends up looking a mess, the silencer is still perfectly ok as long as it's not blown a hole on the inner skin. So don't just go changing because it doesn't look great.

I am assuming this is a TSI due to mention of the fuel pump and it is not a TSI.

Have you checked the Parking Brake cables for being fixed or not and vibrating.

It is a 1.2 Monte Carlo TSI 105HP, parking brake cables are good. As they should be, noise persists on and off of handbrake.

So everyone understands or gets a picture of the whereabouts of this noise, I'm 95% sure it's from the rear right of the car in and around the fuel tank area. Under normal driving it's fine it's only when idle the vibrating starts and when the car is warm (not cold).

So check out the Filler Pipe and Vent Pipe and generally around that area when on a ramp.

Anti siphon etc.

Not done this, I'll add that to my list lol

Have a look at the air filter box. They can rattle, as mine does and I need to sort it. They vibrate and make an annoying noise at low revs, mine seems to go at higher revs but not necessarily the same for everyone. I thought at first, it was hitting the silver coloured module behind it but it seems to be the floor it stands on and I think its the retaining rubbers getting weak that start it off.

I plan to pop it off and but a rubber mat, similar to sat-nav dash mat underneath to see if that helps. It helped to put a bit of from behind the filter box, between the box and the silver module but that fell out of place after a while and it started being noisy again.

Just a thought!

I think the issue is definitely from the back end, there's what looks like a white canister next to the fuel tank which am I right in saying is a filter?

I can actually feel the fuel line coming out resonating in sync with the vibrating sound. Has anyone heard about the before and would a simple filter change sort this problem?

Plenty Timing chain threads in any section with models with Euro 5 1.2TSI's.

You said "i think the issue is definitely at the back end, "

It's definitely not engine related, it's rear of car fuel tank area/fuel lines.

A noise from maybe the rear right hand side only when the engine is warmed up and off load - that is normally the conditions that EVAP is operated under broadly speaking, and you think that it is coming from maybe the area of the carbon fume catcher canister, so maybe it is just the clipping in or general mounting of the EVAP purge line that runs up to the front of the car?

So check if it is the fuel filter, or is that a Carbon Canister on a 1.2TSI.  I know nothing about those engines.

Where is the location if this condenser?

Or even the low pressure pump that takes fuel up to the high pressure pump.  Come to think about it, in the past the EVAP carbon can assembly was black, I have not looked to see if they are now white-ish! (shooting my previous idea up in flames)

The carbon can assembly should be very close to the fuel filler area, but as I said above, maybe still black plastic and not white-ish.

This is an in-line filter am I right in saying? Or is this the Carbon evap can you said about?

See pic I just uploaded, is that a filter or evap can?

That is the fuel filter.

Edit:- well it is a petrol filter and fuel pressure regulator all in one, the 3rd pipe is the excess fuel being returned to the tank.

So, if that is making a noise, it will probably be the pressure regulator that is doing that, but why, faulty low pressure delivery pump, faulty fuel filter assembly, or a pipe not clipped into place correctly, or like wise the filter assembly, though it looks like it is fitted as intended.

Take it to kwikfit or local equivalent, ask them to put it on ramps and please locate source of rattle/vibration. If they fix it, slip them some beer money.

Just done a Service on the car and changed out all filters including the inline fuel filter. Immediately after disconnecting the fuel lines the fuel that drained out of the filter wasn't very clean.

That aside start the car up after the filter change and take it for a drive the noise had completely stopped. However after driving 400 miles from a full tank to vertically empty the noise has now come back

My only thinking for this is that when the car gets low on fuel maybe something in the tank gets pulled into the filter and causes this resonating noise on idle.

Thoughts guys, much appreciated.
