Turning DRL's off

Featured Replies

I have a friend with VCDS but he hasn't used it on a Superb (67 plate 1.6tdi DSG) Just looking for advice re procedure , Thanks in advance.

It's among one of the simplest VCDS changes.

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/380829-superb-mkiii-vcds-adaptations-tried-and-tested/?do=findComment&comment=4460928

The VCDS channel numbering has changed since the post but the adaptation is still there (either scroll through the list to find it manually or enter something like 'Tagfahrlicht Aktivierung' in the search field to limit the listings).

You may need to lock the car after changing the adaptation before the DRL option appears in the Lights menu.

Thanks Billyjim that’s ideal

I'm mystified as to why anyone would want to turn them off. Surely anything that makes your car more visible is good thing.

When I'm parked and waiting on a winter's eve with the engine running to keep warm and the headlights are set to off I don't necessarily want to be still lighting up the neighbourhood with the bright DRLs still on.

Just whack your side lights on - that’ll dim them by 50%, or it might even be more than that.

Come to think of it, I’m sure my O3 had the option to do it in the infotainment? Can’t remeber though.

As above. Is it not already an option in the car menu?

No, the option of light asistance is not able to be accessed even though it appears on the screen.

as @BillyJim stated earlier - it needs to enabled/coded in the Superb, then you'll get the option in the infotainment.....

easy..try doing VCDS work on a car in a garage with the DRLs on at max power....

or for that matter any work on the car which involves the ignition being on....

For cars first used after 01/03/2018 DRL's are an MOT item. Obviously such a car does not need an MOT until 2021 but I have always been told that if an item that is tested for the MOT is not working or does not comply at any time then the car is technically defective and the user can be fined e.g. headlanps, horn, tyre tread depth to name three.

Your insurance would also consider such a move a a modification and if involved in an accident cover could technically be withdrawn. There is no way they will permit a modification if it makes the car illegal to use.

If the OP's car is earlier than March this year they can go ahead with no problems but perhaps a call to the insurers would still be a good idea.

There is no illegal modification..all you are doing is activating the existing coding in the module to bring up the option in the infotainment screen sub menu to turn on or off the DRLs....just a simple toggle switch...takes a few seconds to switch back & forth that's it...

obviously you leave them on all the time...but off then working on the car etc...

If the law requires cars first used after 01 March this year to have working DRL's then obviously turning them off is an illegal modification.

But as many could argue, its only illegal if you get caught..

The coding is there..so not illegal...

how you use it is.....

if I turn the DRLs off & I'm in my garage doing work to the car which require the ignition then what I am doing is NOT illegal...

If I forget to turn them back on & drive down the public road then that is illegal....here in UK...

It would appear you edited your post whilst I was typing mine so we now appear to be on the same page legally. As you say in your subsequent post

"if I turn the DRLs off & I'm in my garage doing work to the car which require the ignition then what I am doing is NOT illegal...

If I forget to turn them back on & drive down the public road then that is illegal."

Totally agree.

So what happens when the service department are working on the car?

They tend to connect up an external power supply if the ignition needs to be on for extended periods, I think.

That would stop the battery draining but surely the ignition is still on.

Why's that a problem?

they don't care & the garages usually have quite bright lights

I think the main point is that some people prefer to turn the DRLs off when the ignition is one....whilst they are doing work to the car..

Having the DRLs on in my garage is quite bright & annoying...so I prefer to be able to turn them off...when I am doing work on the car that requires the ignition to be on....evne if the car is connected to a 12V supply...

Like doing a full admap of all the controllers with VCDS...which takes ages.....(much quicker with the new cable but still takes 30-45mins)

What model year is urs?

DRL's look brilliant on the Superb.  Would never want them turned off!

I'd imagine the Police on a stake-out at night in the winter with the engine running to keep warm would like the option to turn them off briefly.

I see quite a few MkIII Octavia taxi's with their DRL's disabled, possibly to them being halogen and them sitting at the rank with the engine off but the ignition on fr extended periods, not wanting to drain the battery.

Our new Kodiaq has similar strip LED's to those on the MkIII Superb, flicking the headlight switch on our 2016 MkIII Octavia to the sidelight position dimmed the DRL's, but on our Kodiaq they don't dim (or extinguish), the only difference between DRL's and sidelights are the illumination of the LED 'whiskers' in the headlight and the turning on of the rear tail lights and number plate lights.

There must be a reason for Skoda removing the option to turn the DRL's on and off via the infotainment system, perhaps on cars of a certain age they have to be turned on if fitted (unlike prior to 2011 when they didn't, even if fitted)?
