Dmf

Featured Replies

Hi all , my car is broken, on the way home there was a really loud vibration and bang from under the car, arriving home my dmf was really clunky, more than before.... off to do some shopping ... car won’t start, not even turn over .... just a tick under the bonnet when you turn the key..... flywheel seized??? Anyone with any experience of this please???

If the dmf has broken i'd get the clutch and dmf replaced. You'd be looking about a grand ish to get it changed.

How long have you been driving around with a clunky DMF?

Basically it sounds as though the DMF has disintegrated and parts have jammed in the bellhousing. Sometimes this can damage the gearbox/bellhousing - the DMF should have been changed when first noisy.

If you are lucky it's just a full clutch and DMF.

When mine went it was a very fast progression, I had just bought the car so would not have been party to any noises leading up to the failure but Skoda had just rebuilt the gearbox under warranty at 188K miles and just under 3 years old and did not change the DMF, they also screwed up several other things.

The engine started to kick back and shake violently on start up, from the first occurence it was less than a day and perhaps 5 or 6 re-starts before it failed catastrophically, the drive/isolation straps linking the pressure plate to the clutch cover sheared with the violent reversals of inertia and then carved their way into the bellhousing, did not seize the engine but nobody with any mechanical sympathy would have driven it like that, we managed to save the bellhousing.

I went to the garage to check and was told by the mechanical that they can rattle for years before needing to be replaced and to not worry , drove home and turned car off ....hour later went to start it and nothing but a click ....AA have since been and said flywheel seized or engine seized but more likely flywheel due to car running fine until I turned it off .....my vw bora rattled worse for 10 years and 140k miles that I drove it.

Not sure on the 1k to fix it ....estimate so far was £700 but he's gotta check parts prices .....online can buy solid mass or dual for £240 and then 5hrs Labour to do the job

Mine sometimes juddered on start up, generally having the clutch in when starting stopped it and the dmf rattle usually stopped when clutch was pressed, mechanic said it's pretty unusual for a flywheel to seize and not turn at all ...

.....if it's repairable .....a solid mass will be going on

AA have been and towed car to the garage, in gear we rocked the car and nothing's budging .....he said engine seized or flywheel but seing as the car drove home fine he's 99% it's the flywheel seized .......where is best place to get a Valeo solid flywheel conversion kit?

It's a gamble with a failing DMF but I've seen a gearbox bellhousing just about blown apart with damage to surrounding parts after a DMF failure - this was on a Mondeo though.

If you look inside a DMF you do wonder how they stay together even when they are new!

On the lower power 1.9 diesels you will get away with a SMF conversion - indeed I think Skoda even have some official part numbers now. Just remember the DMF does a good smoothing job so a SMF will feel coarser. Whilst in there change all the clutch parts - you have too for the conversion any way as it is different as the shock springs are in the plate.

Yep, just take it a bit easy 'til you get round to swapping it, as the car will behave a little unevenly under heavy braking/steering.

UPDATE....My mechanic has informed me that the car is fixed ....not picked it up or tested yet but have had fitted a Valeo solid mass clutch kit bought from online car parts.co.uk for £261 and Labour of £220 so pretty chuffed with that considering skoda or vw would probably charge £1000..... I will update again when I have driven the car

Confused by my quote there, that looks like it's from another thread? About a broken spring?

I did post about a broken spring a while back ..... but also the dual mass flywheel.... basically the big springs inside them....the fault with my car was one had broken through the side of the dual mass and wedged in the bell housing .... luckily I can report that all is fixed :-)
