Bleed valve

Featured Replies

Quick question does my car have a bleed valve anywhere to purge air from the cooling system ???

Don't think so. Can/should use the coolant temperature sensor as one on the mpi, I seem to recall.

No, it isn't necessary, the cooling system is not prone to airlocking.

thats a shame i was hoping maybe i had an air lock as my heaters have gone cold lol no white smoke/steam from exhaust so hopefully not a head gasket issue but i changed my coolant 2 days ago and now heaters running cold so thought maybe some air was still in system :/

Yeah I had the sensor off but can still hear the water gurgling behind the dash so thought maybe air lock as heaters were fine before I will try back flushing the matrix first i guess.

Check for residual pressure in the expansion tank when the engine is stone cold.

There was a little bit what does that mean ???

Keep checking it for a few mornings, before starting up for the first time.  Tends to mean combustion gases are finding their way into the cooling system, generally via a HG leak.

thats bad news then :(

Have a look to see if your engine has the modified head gasket fitted. If it has there will be the letters TEMAC in red on the front right corner of the gasket.

Not all that bad. One of the easiest Fabia engines to change the head gasket on. I seem to remember @Tech1e saying he did one in his lunchbreak once, though he is a talented fella I believe.

Just run it up to operating temp with the cap off.

Any air should return to the expansion tank through the return and out the top.

Ok done as said i still can't get any heat from the heater is there any way to check if the heater matrix is blocked as it looks a pig to get at the two pipes to try and flush it.

The matrix is fine, your problem is head gasket failure, stop thrashing around and face facts.

Listen unlike you i don't know everything so was doing the obvious and looking at easier possibilities before the big one and as I've said before whilst I appreciate all input i do not appreciate your derogatory attitude when posting to me so please if you cannot message in a respectful manner then don't bother at all !!!!

Wondering if you checked if it has the TEMAC gasket? If it hasn't it might help to explain why it's gone. The TEMAC ones can still fail of course but less so.

You don't LISTEN, everyone here is trying to tell you, I'm doing you the favour by being direct and unequivocal, what have I said that is really so offensive?

I can see that bud but as with anyone i was trying to cross off a possible simpler resolve before having to face the task of a head gasket which is only common sense and it's not what you say it's how you say it as if your boss gift and we are pond suck try speaking to a person in a respectful manner is my advice manners cost nothing unlike a head gasket lol !!!!

My advice is that you change the head gasket, you can keep your advice and I don't care if you don't like how I write, I don't like how you write either.

Thought I had a wheel bearing on the way out then realized it was just sepulchrave whining lol.

Hey, I'm not the one with the blown head gasket who's thrashing around trying to fix anything except what's actually wrong with the car.

My head gasket is just fine, no whining from me, don't get started on wheel bearings, you need a special tool. :D

There would seem an obvious link and it sounds just like an airlock in the heater circuit, unless you have overheated the car since with low coolant then there is no reason to be panicked into believing the head gasket has gone. I am unclear of any facts that you should be facing up to, only supposition.

I would follow the advice given to run the engine up to temp with the expansion vessel cap undone a couple of turns after slowly filling it to the level line or even slightly above, also make sure the heater is set to the maximum temperature, it should chase out the airlock.

If unsuccessfull try revving the engine and even going for a short drive, let the engine cool overnight with the cap released and top up again the next day if necessary. If that fails you could do a pressure test to diagnose head gasket failure but if the system is not over-pressurising and ejecting coolant I would persist in trying to overcome the airlock.

Heater settings make no difference to the coolant flow through the matrix. There's no bypass valve.

I'm feeling rejected :tongueout:

C'mon @Stewartasb, TMB's question is highly relevant and easy to answer.
