OP needs to confirm what gasket he has fitted to car as it is....

OP is too scared to check/acknowledge as the common expression by many people to the phrase " its the head gasket"...usually results in the cars owner sh1tt1ng themselves & images of money pouring down the drain...

OP is a newbie & please don't scare them too much..please be gentle...

He's a grown-up, he needs to face facts, I'm not going to tiptoe around like he's some thin-skinned infant with an impulse control problem.

He has residual pressure in the expansion tank when the car is cold and the heater matrix is gas-locked with a juicy fat bubble.

It's a wrap, HGF.

As far as I can see i have a standard by as there is no temac lettering to be seen.

OK, that may explain why it's been more prone to failing.

My fabia has had residual pressure in the expansion tank for the last 20k miles,

Had head gasket checked out 2 years ago and nothing was amiss, I just live with it.

Might try running to temp with cap off.

My heater works fine though. Silly question  but are you letting the engine get up to A decent temp?

Yeah I did 50 miles i think it was to temp by then lol.

just an update car now fine as was and still is head gasket the issue was the heater matrix and 2 of the pipes were basically grunged up with 20 years of crap lol a change of the 2 pipes a reverse flush of the heater matrix and the system and some nice new coolant and happily no residual pressure in expansion tank and the heater is nice and toasty :)
