Delamination on DSG gear lever

Featured Replies

As per title, anyone else suffering with the ‘chrome’ finish coming off the DSG gear lever?

It’s at the top just above the switch you press in.

Mrs Dunc actually cut her palm on it last week.  My car is 2014, but I had the gear stick changed in July 2017 due to the ‘error workshop’ message - so it’s lasted little more than a year. To be fair, the chrome started coming off within weeks ......

It’s in to the dealers tomorrow for assessment. I asked how long the part was warrantied for and they said “parts replaced under manufacturer’s warranty aren’t covered for any period at all” !!

Any thoughts?

It happened to me as well. I also cut myself in that delaminated edge. A trip to the dealer and the knob has been replaced under warranty - I was still under warranty.

They did not have the piece in stock so I had to come back 2 days later. It took them approx 30 minutes to fit the new knob.

Oh, I forgot, the new piece is definitely a better design. No issues since then ( 1 year ago)

Repairs under warranty don't get warranty beyond original warranty.

You'll be lucky if you get it changed for free.

That’s very poor. So a part can be fitted under warranty, fall apart within a few months & you have no come back?  Very odd and wrong.

We’ll see tomorrow.

Agreed, but thats the way it is.

Replacement parts warranty
All ŠKODA Original replacement parts carry a parts warranty for a period of 2 years/unlimited mileage, from the date of purchase. Items with warranties in excess of 2 years will be advised to you at the time of purchase. The 2 year parts warranty does not apply to parts fitted under the terms of the vehicle warranty, which are warranted for the remaining period of the vehicle warranty

Mine has done it too. Been like it since I took the car on last Oct. 64 plate.

Been looking at replacement myself or other ways round bloke wrapping the the button or some other way. Does anyone know if the button can be removed easily as an individual part?

I'm on my third.

First one delaminated.

Second one had "Error Workshop P" etc message.

Third one is OK but the chrome feels weird on the bottom under the button. See how long it lasts.

One year left on warranty.

This is true but it’s a little known fact that if you contribute towards the cost of a part replacement during the vehicle warranty period, you are effectively purchasing the part and therefore the full term of the parts warranty under the consumer rights act. That part is now covered independently of the vehicle warranty but you need a receipt for the transaction.

For example, If a dealership changes a part under the 3 year vehicle warranty a month before the end of the period and you give them something towards the replacement cost (must get an itemised receipt stating the part number and payment made), you now have the full warranty term of the part fitted as if you bought it yourself from the parts counter. The parts warranty remains after the vehicle warranty runs out.

£1 is a contribution!

Interesting, but too late for me.

Car was in this morning. I asked them to photograph the delamination and approach SCS direct. That way I drove away in mine and didn’t have to faff about with a hire car.

Haven’t heard back from them since.

I suspect the answer will be as above - i.e. you’re not covered pal. Maybe an offer to provide a contribution to the new part.

We’ll see and I will update here.

Press for goodwill, pay part and get 2 yr warranty automatically. But make sure you claim another replacement before that runs out!

I know your pain.

I remember this happening on my MkII manual a few years back, leaving a horrible rough edge I caught every time I changed gear. On that, the plastic cap just popped off and was replaced with a part from eBay for a couple of quid - does the cap not prise off on the DSG?

It's not the cap, it's the sprung release button

So, update!

Skoda have agreed to replace the DSG gear lever.

I have to admit I am pleasantly surprised.

Just a thought, but could the shifter not be replaced with an alternative?

I’ve just spent the week in an 18 plate Passat hire car, and the DSG shifter looks and feels much better quality than the Skoda’s.

The Passat’s only has the DSG branding so it wouldn’t look out of place.

Surely it’d be the same fitting???

Cheers,

Nick

But they are slower

I’ve got the exact same thing happening on my MY2017 after 17k.

Does **** me off they keep getting silly things like this wrong.; similar issue on my MK2FL, along with self-destructing badges.....

Your lease car has 50bhp less than my lighter car so you will always be slower. Take it to any circuit and I will gladly demonstrate this to you. Even a Caterham got despatched by my manual around Snetterton and they are supposed to be a track weapon, so 0-60 times are pretty irrelevant.:tongueout:

I had delamination on the manual gear lever on my old Mk2.5.

It delaminated in such a way that it left a nice sharp edge - only realised there was an issue when I was driving and noticed my left hand was bleeding quite impressively.

All covered under warranty at the time etc.

Be happy to meet you on circuit, just December is **** for time off & the Royal Mail ain't that flexible on leave. Kinda reckoned your extra power cost you about 60 quid per bhp also think the gap has closed with my new software & R600 system. The extra weight of the DSG is more than offset by the speed of the gear change & it's consistancy but, it's all academic really.

When do you give it back? Next August one careful owner low mileage Vrs245 in the dealer network for sale. Feel sorry for the second owner already.

DSG gear lever replaced today FOC.

They also changed the 12V fuse as that had stopped working recently.

Also have told me very clearly (after I asked them to double-check) that the new gearshift lever is guaranteed for 2 years, including the ‘error workshop’ fault too.
